The aging of people with HIV. Close to 400 000 people with HIV in the US are over age 55 years and at risk for age-associated dementias (AAD). Study with simulated cohorts estimates that 22.1% and 16.3% of 60-year-old male and female individuals, respectively, with HIV would develop AAD by 80 years compared with 15.9% and 13.3% of male individuals/female individuals in the general population. How can we inform and help health/supportive systems to plan for these upcoming changes? 🚨 Tackling Pill Burden in HIV Treatment! 🚨 The HIV life cycle is disrupted by different inhibitors which act to block replication of the virus at various stages. 🧬 Patient adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has for long been hampered by overwhelming pill burden 💊 . Our recently published mini-review, 👉 "Pill Burden: A Major Barrier to HAART Adherence and Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCS) as its Solution." addresses one of the biggest challenges in HIV patient care—pill burden which is a major contributor to non-adherence to HAART. In this review, we explore the contribution and challenges of innovative solutions like Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs) that combine multiple drugs into a single pill. FDCs not only simplify treatment regimens but also enhance patient compliance and overall treatment outcomes. Our work underscores the need for integrating multidisciplinary approaches in designing user-friendly and effective therapeutic strategies. 🔍 Dive into the full review for a comprehensive look at these challenges and opportunities! mothers2mothers recently released our 2023 results. And drumroll 🥁… we achieved the incredible outcome of a 0% transmission rate of HIV from mother to child for our enrolled clients—a goal that has driven our passion since our work began in 2001! We also delivered remarkable results in preventing new HIV infections among pregnant and breastfeeding women. Only 0.23% of these m2m clients who were HIV-negative when enrolled in our programme contracted HIV in 2023—15 times lower than the global benchmark of 3.6%. mothers2mothers was born to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and these remarkable results show that it IS possible to end this devastating pandemic and that it CAN happen in our generation. These successes underscore the incredible and tireless efforts of mothers2mothers community health workers, and the effectiveness of mothers2mothers' targeted interventions and community-based approach that ensure people access and stay in care—critical to preventing HIV transmission. On the journey to end AIDS by 2030, we must stay the course, and invest in proven, community-led solutions.

This article shines a light on the growing rates of discontinuation of HIV treatment. As we know, this can jeopardize the health of people living with HIV, increase drug resistance, and increase transmissions. The article identifies some of the most common reasons for discontinuation. What caught my eye is that inflexible service offerings, long wait times, and mental health challenges are high on the list. Discontinuation is indicative of gaps in the health system to adequately meet clients’ needs for flexibility and efficiency, and for person-centered, integrated, stigma-free care. https://lnkd.in/dZmVftYr
