The Grand Duke Mine, Timor Victoria. This impressive deep lead mine operated for 27 years in the late 19th century, under several company names - the Duke and Timor, Duchess of Timor, Duke, and finally, Grand Duke, as we know it today. Over almost three decades of operation, this mine extracted 216,000 ounces of gold from ancient riverbeds which were deeply buried here. It was one of the most important mines in the district, employing hundreds of men over its lifetime. The full video about this mine takes a look at a shocking over-winding accident which occurred here back in 1883 which claimed the lives of four men. New safety regulations had just been announced, which addressed the issue of over-winding. Unfortunately, the safety measures required by the new regulations - automatic catches below the poppet heads - had not yet been installed at this mine. Each disaster in the early days of our mining history has driven the development of crucial safety measures, protocols and innovations, contributing to the advanced and comprehensive safety standards upheld in the industry today. Now, the mining company Skeena Resources aims to re-open the old Eskay Creek Mine as a large open-pit operation. It is just one of dozens of developing and operational mines dotting the headwaters of the Unuk, Stikine and Taku Rivers. My concern is that if we allow this region to be transformed into a mining district these life-giving streams will stop forever. No amount of money can compensate for the loss of our rivers. By honoring the lessons passed down by our foremothers and drawing strength from our ancestors, we can stand up against the forces that have taken so much from us. While diligently working to acquire Bell Mountain, a fully permitted #gold and #silver project in #Nevada, we want to spotlight our larger Pine Grove gold project. Though not fully permitted yet, Pine Grove is in the final stages of permitting and we believe it holds untapped potential that we are eager to uncover soon. The Pine Grove district is mainly made up of a type of rock called Jurassic granodiorite, which has some interesting variations and alterations. The granodiorite rocks have intrusions (dikes and sills) of different compositions like andesite, dacite, and rhyolite. These are believed to be the sources of gold mineralization in the area. Native gold is found in small quartz veinlets, stockworks, and disseminations within the granodiorite. Where unoxidized, these veinlets contain minerals like pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and native gold, along with elevated copper levels. The gold found here is typical of the "Shear Zone" subtype of Plutonic-Related Gold Quartz Veins and Veinlets. Pine Grove's PEA (2011, updated 2015) reports that significant exploration potential exists beyond current resources and recommends that infill and offset drilling be performed around the Wilson deposit, deep drilling in the Wheeler deposit, and expansion exploration drilling in known outlying anomalous intercepts. As funding becomes available, additional exploration drilling programs will be developed to potentially increase the size of the resource base. These programs will test numerous prospective areas of the Pine Grove property. An updated NI 43-101 technical report and an updated Pre-Feasibility report is also planned. Los Cedros Protective Forest, a natural reserve in the northwest Ecuadorian Andes, is the world’s leading example of how non-anthropocentric laws can be used to effectively defend the planet. Indeed, when the state-owned mining company ENAMI EP got its concession to mine an extensive area of Los Cedros – Peter Yeung of YES! Media reports – the Indigenous communities of Ecuador rose together and presented a legal challenge, which made it to Ecuador’s Constitutional Court, defending the forest’s right to exist as a living entity. This mentality is the core of Indigenous belief, which states that nature is a system to which humans belong and with which they must harmoniously coexist.
