Speech about Long-duration energy storage: House of Lords, 7 May 2024 "Baroness Northover: What role do you see long-duration energy storage—ie, storage over multiple days, weeks or months, as opposed to using the batteries in a shorter time—playing on a decarbonised grid? Justin Tomlinson: We are anticipating an additional 30 to 50 gigawatts for long-term duration. It is going to be absolutely key. As we move away from unabated energy sources, this is the bit that will allow us to complement our ramp up on renewables, which can be inconsistent in how much they can produce—ie, solar when the sun does not shine and wind when the wind is not blowing. It is an absolutely key part." https://lnkd.in/gwNnCRhK

Electricity generation will be similar in all markets more or less the same everywhere.
As Brad Plumer and Nadja Popovich highlighted in the The New York Times last week, battery energy storage is transforming electric grids across the country. What’s happening in California and Texas today is beginning to play out all over the country. Batteries will be critical to making the renewable energy transition a reality! California crosses 10 GW battery storage threshold: California is adding massive amounts of battery energy storage, and the project pipeline shows no sign of slowing down. Batteries are playing an increasingly dominant role on the grid soaking up solar in the middle of the day and shifting it to the evening peak, where they have become the biggest single supplier. #EnergyStorage #GridsIntegration #UtilityScaleStorage

Energy Storage: An Underutilized Transmission Asset? Energy storage has enormous potential as a transmission grid asset, yet its deployment remains limited due to regulatory and market uncertainties. While FERC allows storage to be classified as a transmission asset, complexities around "dual-use" systems that provide both market services and grid reliability continue to pose challenges. Notable projects in Wisconsin and California show how storage can replace traditional grid infrastructure and boost reliability. However, until rules are finalized, the full value of energy storage in the transmission grid remains untapped. #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy #GridResilience #FERC #Sustainability #CleanEnergy https://lnkd.in/eHis2p6T

The energy transition is a reality, and the efforts of various countries to achieve a transition to a sustainable economy through the adoption of renewable energy generation technologies and energy storage are increasingly evident. Some cases, such as the one described in the article (representing the huge capacity of energy storage in one of the states of the greatest world’s power), or the goals set by the Australian government, make me reflect on what the future holds, how the energy market will evolve and how Colombia is facing these challenges. As mentioned in the article, just one state in the USA has a battery storage capacity of approximately 10GW, while 52GW are projected by 2045. Are we really aware of the amount of energy that this represents? According to XM’s annual report for 2021, Colombia reached an electric demand of 10,8GW in October of that year, so 96,1% of this power could be met by the immense californian storage capacity, which consist on residential, commercial and grid-connected storage (with an autonomy ranging between 2 to 4 hours). It’s incredible to think about the massive inversion to achieve this goal, and in it’s just that in the last 3 years 770MW of energy storage has been installed. Furthermore, we observe how around the world, efforts are being made to address reliability challenges of removable energies (like as solar and wind energy) through energy storage solutions. Australia, for instance, aims to achieve a storage capacity of 9GW by 2030. The energy sector is so important that in the south of Australia, Victoria’s tender for 600MW/2400MWh of storage capacity received an overwhelming response, with offers totaling 19GW. This underscores the robust industry supporting the development of these engineering solutions. With news like this, the significant technical and financial efforts surrounding these solutions become increasingly apparent, making us think about what is coming for Colombian industry in this field, will we see a notable increase in BESS systems installations? How close are we to implementing green hydrogen storage? I’m glad to be part of the professionals that works facing the challenges of the energy transition.

Today, the US government launched the Federal-State Modern Grid Deployment Initiative: "Participating states have committed to prioritize efforts that support the adoption of modern grid solutions to expand grid capacity and build modern grid capabilities on both new and existing transmission and distribution lines [...] These solutions increase the capacity and throughput based on real-time conditions. Deploying these tools means that renewables and other clean sources of power can be integrated sooner and more cost-effectively than waiting for new transmission construction, which will address load growth challenges more rapidly, create good-paying jobs, and lower Americans’ utility bills." #energy #energytransition #electricity #renewables
