Not only are lawyers’ brains different from most of the general population, but there also are further personality differences between top rainmakers and most of the lawyer population. Yet law firms continue to rely heavily on the traditional criteria for selecting which lawyers to hire — primarily pedigree – and then wonder why their lawyers are not crackerjack business developers. Dr. Larry Richards' findings about the Lawyer Brain (discussed in yesterday’s post) were echoed in the two-year Lawyer Metrics Rainmaker Study which concluded in 2013. That study revealed that rainmakers tend to score higher on the following traits or characteristics: ·       Engagement: which is a desire to be regularly engaged in an activity, usually work related; ·       Dominance: which is a tendency to exercise power and influence over others; ·       Motivating others; and ·       Risk taking. Interestingly, the study showed no difference in the characteristics of male and female rainmakers. So, we have known for over 10 years that rainmakers do, in fact, have identifiably different personality traits from other lawyers. Given this evidence, and the fact that law firms are desperately seeking to hire big rainmakers laterally—which is an expensive proposition--why are law firms so resistant to changing their hiring criteria? It seems they could seek out junior lawyers with the “right stuff,” with or without the fancy pedigree, and grow their own top rainmakers.
