Why can’t we just ask customers what they want? Wouldn’t product development be easier if we could just ask customers what they want and deliver it? 1️⃣ People care about their problems, not your product. When customers suggest features, they’re usually asking for tweaks to their current workarounds. They’re solving symptoms of a problem, not addressing the root cause. As product teams, it’s our job to think bigger and uncover the deeper needs behind their requests. 2️⃣ We are terrible at predicting our own behavior. Using new products or features means changing behavior. Instead of using the old workaround you are going to change how you do things to adopt the new solution. And change is hard. 3️⃣ All decisions are emotional I like to think I'm a logical and rational person, but unfortunately it's not true. Every single decision is driven by emotion. A fascinating study on brain injuries showed that people who couldn’t process emotions also couldn’t make decisions, even simple ones like picking a lunch date time. This is a huge challenge in user research because people genuinely believe they’ll use the features they ask for, but their predictions often don’t match reality because they are thinking logically. So, what’s the takeaway for product teams? The key is to dig deeper. Don’t just listen to what customers say they want—focus on uncovering the emotions and behaviors driving their actions. Have you been fooled by marketeers’ psychological moonshots? Did you know that the close button in most elevators doesn’t actually work? Elevator doors are designed to close after a certain amount of time, for safety and legal reasons. So you pushing the button makes no difference. But this illusionary placebo creates the impression of control and increases customer satisfaction. Customers also judge their entire experience on just two moments -the best (or worst) part, and at the end. It also explains why Uber drivers are trained to be exceptionally kind to you at the end of a ride. A psychological moonshot is a relatively small investment that drastically improves the perception of something. It offers a fresh and cost-effective approach to product innovation. It’s worth knowing your customers and their needs and emotions. 𝗪𝗲 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗪𝗲 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄... 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗗𝗼 𝗪𝗲 𝗗𝗼? 🤔 We've all been there. New Year's resolutions, fresh starts, a burning desire for change... and then, reality hits. We know hitting the gym more would be amazing for our health, but January's enthusiasm often fades faster than a post-holiday tan. In fact, studies show that about 80% of New Year's resolutions fail by February, and only about 8% of people actually achieve their goals. Ouch! This isn't just about gym memberships; it applies to software quality assurance too! We might know the recommended practices, the most efficient testing methods, even the automation tools that could save us hours... but sometimes, the sheer inertia of "how we've always done it" wins. As an AI Navigator with a background in QA, I see this pattern everywhere. Sometimes, outsourcing tasks – like renovating a bathroom – is the smartest move. But often, the 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄. The key is often finding the right support system. Think about it: would you rather wrestle with a complex testing framework alone, or collaborate with a colleague who can guide you, troubleshoot problems, and celebrate milestones together? Similarly, sustainable lifestyle changes, like regular exercise, are rarely about sheer willpower. It’s about finding the “thing that motivates you” to show up. I know I'm more motivated by accountability to others than self-discipline. That's why I run with a group – showing up for my friends at 6 am gets me out the door, something hitting the gym solo never could. The lesson? Knowing the recommended way isn't always enough. Sometimes, the most efficient approach is finding the right support – whether it’s a colleague, a friend, a community, or even a well-designed tool – to help us 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴. As the year comes to a close, it's a time when many of us reflect on the past and set goals for the future. In product management and business, it's common to digitize objectives and track metrics.
