The person who takes the reins of marketing here should have a deep background and extensive experience in PMM 2. Experience in PLG and working in startups that are B2SMB or B2C is a must. Not B2B 3. How to avoid the same mistake 9 out of every 10 founders make when hiring a CMO or VP of Marketing for the first time. Most founders assume if a marketing leader has been successful in one company, they will be successful again -- especially if they've worked for a big tech company. What works for one company, might not work for another. When hiring a marketing leader for the first time, you need to know if they were in a similar GTM to you. Their strategy will largely have been dependent on their revenue goal, their new logo target and their average contract value. My Top 3️⃣ Lessons from the Last few months 1️⃣ Product vs. Distribution: Don’t obsess over the product; obsess over distribution. With all the new tools, AI software, and connectivity, building a product has become so easy. The real differentiator in success is distribution. Building it is hard, and influencer marketing can’t replace your own distribution. 2️⃣ Hire for Hunger: You cannot control people’s growth; you can just nudge them in a direction. If you hire people with great talent but no hunger, you have to keep them motivated endlessly. It is not sustainable. Hire people who have natural hunger in them and give them a direction. That’s all that matters. 3️⃣ The 1% Chance: There comes a time when the chance of success is very low; these are times when you need to trust yourself. Keep your head down, believe in the process, and continue the grind. Hit or miss, you will definitely land in a better position than before. #lessons #product #distribution #hiring #marketing

The only way to grow is to get uncomfortable. I've been a stereotypically introverted digital marketer for 9 years. I avoided sales roles early in my career because there's no damn way I was smiling and dialing. I'd rather not eat. But I'm building toward becoming a GTM leader, whether in-house or as a fractional CMO. It's why I'm pushing past my self-limiting beliefs and loner-ish tendencies. And it's working. I wrapped my first day as an on-floor rep at a convention, smiling and saying hi to strangers before delivering elevator pitches to convince dentists to start free trials of hiring software. No, I can't be your lead AE. But this was a big step toward securing my future. By being the guy who can lead full GTM motions because I haven't just set the strategy, I've done the work. Perhaps this is a bit braggadocious. Or self-centered. Whatever it is, it isn't introverted. It's not shying away from taking my career in the direction I choose instead of accepting what I'm given.
