Just wrapped up #HLTHUSA #HLTH2024, the largest healthcare conference to date! The Venetian Resort Las Vegas was a fantastic venue (though the food… not so much, but more on that later).
On the bright side, #HLTH was the ultimate one-stop shop for healthcare innovation – and I do mean innovation. 80% of the conference felt like an AI expo! Everywhere you turned, it was AI this, AI that. But therein lies the rub: are we creating an AI bubble? There was clear resistance from health systems around “point solutions,” and with so much money flowing into these, is it sustainable? Time will tell, but the takeaway: tread AI with caution.
Now, let’s talk size. This conference might have outgrown itself. Many colleagues (myself included) felt the sheer scale made it tough to connect with people – you miss more people than you meet! A bit of a maze with a lot of “where did that booth go?” moments. Bigger isn’t always better, HLTH team. Maybe a rethink for next year?
And about that food… let’s just say, my colleague and I bailed on an evening event to hunt down something better. For the price tag, we’d either expect gourmet, or I’d happily pay less and take myself to a better restaurant.
On the upside, the conference brought together the most influential thought leaders. CEOs of top companies, political heavyweights, and most notably, a record representation of physicians. Doctors are getting hands-on with the future of healthcare innovation, which feels like the game-changer we’ve been waiting for. Healthcare is evolving, but a simple AI overlay on a legacy system won’t be the fix – true change starts at the foundation. Thanks to Physician Side Gigs for the enlightenment.
All in all, HLTH 2024 was a whirlwind of ideas, connections, and some food for thought (pun intended). Looking forward to seeing where this all goes next year.
Thank-you Patrick Myles, Ganesh Padmanabhan, Gurpreet Singh, Nisha Mehta, MD, Ashish Atreja, MD, MPH, Min Lang, Arjun Singh, Daniel Kraft, MD, Raihan Faroqui, MD, and Razik Yousfi
