I don’t think it’s common for assistants to be recognized in public ways, though I 100% believe it should be. When it does happen like it did last night when Ayo Edebiri thanked assistants at the Golden Globes, assistants notice and share the news with the world. In fact, one of my most popular blog posts is my open letter I wrote thanking assistants of the world (linked in comments below). Unfortunately, it’s more common for people to see the role of an executive assistant as someone who “gets coffee and makes copies.” But we are much more than that. Assistants are chaos tamers, culture creators, operation experts, inefficiency disruptors, relationship builders, game changers, pulse takers, time benders, and fearless negotiators. To put it simply, assistants are LEADERS. Ayo said in her speech, “I’m very lucky to be an artist,” then called out her gratitude to assistants for managing her crazy emails. This tells me she wants to spend her time being an artist, not replying to emails. Assistants love to help others achieve their dreams. We lead our executives by managing their most valuable asset – their energy – so that they can spend more time doing things they love versus things that drain their energy. Starting the year with a lot on your plate can be overwhelming, especially when you're undergoing a career transformation. Add ADHD to the mix and it's a roller-coaster of emotions. But, it's amazing how corporate can develop one's character. Looking back at how far one has come is inspiring. It's not uncommon to feel challenged and on the verge of giving up. However, it's important to reflect on the reason for joining corporate and how far one has come. Remember, the mind is a powerful tool. Break the cycle and be more headstrong. As my colleague says, "Do not wear your heart on your sleeves." I encourage anyone starting in corporate or feeling challenged to keep pushing. Tuesday Tales: Corporate Gibberish - "Rockstar" Great job, you're a "rockstar!" I’ve tossed that term around a few times at work and have even been dubbed one. Interestingly, while I've met sales colleagues with genuine musical talent, my own musical abilities are decidedly non-existent. Not even close. Every time someone slaps that label on me, I can’t help but chuckle. It’s funny how we pick up these bits of corporate lingo, isn’t it? "Rockstar" used to mean headlining at Madison Square Garden, and now it’s about nailing a presentation or closing a deal. I guess we’ve all got our stages.
