#Students, join us at the Master’s Event and become a Master of Civil Engineering! Muthanna did his B.Tech in Civil Engineering at MIT, Manipal. Whilst there, his home district Coorg was devasted by a series of landslides and debris flows. This sparked a desire to learn more about the natural process and contribute to mitigating society’s risk. The Master in Civil Engineering at TU Delft, with its unique Geotechnical track, has provided the perfect opportunity to do so. Muthanna is now working on his master’s thesis , investigating the 2017 debris flow event in Mocoa, Colombia. The debris flow took the lives of 300 people. Together with researchers from TU Delft and the University of Sheffield, he is exploring the benefits of refining the spatial and temporal distribution of landslides. He aims to better predict debris flow paths and runout, by breaking up the source event into several smaller mass movements.  The outcome of his work will serve to improve the hazard assessment of landslides in tropical mountainous zones across the world! 📢New paper from our group📢: “Modeling non-uniform aluminum foams as sacrificial layers for blast mitigation of protected structures — A theoretical approach” Published in the 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 Previous studies dealt with sacrificial layers made of aluminum foams as protective layers, in order to absorb energy and mitigate structural damage. The coupled dynamic response of the sacrificial layers and the structure that needs to be protected is complicated. While previous studies focused on aluminum foams with uniform density, here we investigate the application of gradient-based density (or nonuniform density foams). We estimate their efficiency in mitigating damage using the Shock Front Theory and compare their performance with uniform-density foams having the same total mass and thickness. The paper presents nontrivial findings, which lead to the understanding that adequate design must be considered when nonuniform foams are used to achieve optimal damage mitigation. I am excited to share a significant milestone from my academic journey that took place back in 2020 during my Master's in Structural Engineering at Vardhaman College of Engineering. My research paper titled ["Effect of Irregularities on Seismic Performance of High Rise Structures"](https://lnkd.in/gDr3w_ky) was published, contributing valuable insights to the field of civil engineering. https://lnkd.in/g7m8CHy5 Summary of the Paper: The research explores the impact of structural irregularities on the seismic performance of high-rise buildings. It delves into how these irregularities, such as variations in mass, stiffness, and geometry, affect the dynamic response of structures during seismic events. By using advanced simulation techniques, the study provides a comprehensive analysis, offering practical solutions to enhance the safety and resilience of high-rise buildings in earthquake-prone areas. The relevance of this research is profound in today’s context as urbanization leads to the construction of more high-rise buildings in seismic zones worldwide. Understanding and mitigating the risks associated with structural irregularities can significantly improve the safety standards and design practices, ultimately safeguarding lives and reducing economic losses during earthquakes. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Professor Bhavani chowdary Talasila, whose invaluable guidance made this publication possible. 🌍 Excited to share my recent research presentation at the International Conference on Materials, Structures and Environment (ICMSE 2024), organized by NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad in association with ISTE Palakkad Chapter and IE(I) Civil Students Chapter 🎉 In this study, I explored the impact of seismic forces on structures with post-tensioned slabs, particularly in challenging sloping terrains. The optimum tendon layout of post-tensioned (PT) slabs was determined, and the seismic performance of a building with a post-tensioned slab was compared to that of a conventional two-way slab on sloping ground using ETABS. The findings highlight innovative approaches to enhance structural resilience in earthquake-prone areas. A big thank you to everyone who attended and engaged in insightful discussions!
