Like many local correctional facilities that have to navigate the complexity of funding and staffing challenges, Niagara County Correctional Facility has looked for ways to improve engagement and safety at their location. In 2021, they partnered with Securus Technologies to introduce tablets and within a year, they reported a 22 percent reduction in infractions. Tablets transformed the daily experience for everyone in the facility—efficiencies for administrators and correctional officers while connecting incarcerated individuals with friends and family, and content to help with #reentry. As I shared recently during my 37-month sentence in federal prison I never once had one correctional officer give me the time of day which in my mind created a more hostile environment, not a safe and secure one. With all due respect, we need leaders in corrections who understand and are committed to rehabilitation and reentry services not just control. Re-entry Simulation was very powerful and eye-opening for me. I hope to see and participate in more of these to help myself and others who work in support, service, and all community resources. Thank you for all who organized and participated in any type of re-entry simulation…whether re-entry due to incarceration, recovery, or just trying to overcome other challenges and obstacles from other situations, there are many difficulties either some have not experienced or don’t understand and sometimes because we just forgot or had support others do not get. As a teenager, my choices did not lead to incarceration or recovery, but they could have and they did lead to dependence on state assistance that would have been impossible to move away from without a lot of support and understanding from individuals close to me. But, I realize that not everyone has family and friends that can help them become independent. It is important we all realize that temporary extra support is what allows people to gain independence, dignity, and confidence. Then, one day, we will be on the other side and advocating for, encouraging, and supporting those who are still in the early stages of the journey.
KJCMH participated in a reentry simulation hosted by the Kentucky Department of Corrections with assistance from Blackburn Correctional Complex during its last meeting of 2023. KJCMH will establish a workgroup in early 2024 to focus on reentry services for people exiting incarceration.
