Our Founder, Brian Koehn, shares some thoughts for #NationalCrimeVictimsRightsWeek: Dear Community,   As we observe National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) from April 21-27, 2024, our team at Social Purpose Corrections is driven to reevaluate and reshape the culture of corrections. With approximately 40% of the 2 million incarcerated individuals having been incarcerated five to ten times, it is imperative to ask: How many new victims are created each day when we fail to adequately prepare returning citizens for reintegration?   This year's NCVRW theme, "Rights, Respect, Recovery," perfectly encapsulates our vision. It underscores the necessity of fostering a corrections environment that not only respects but also rehabilitates and prepares individuals for a successful return to society. The current correctional system often focuses merely on containment, which inadvertently perpetuates a cycle of crime and re-victimization.   Our approach is centered on cultural transformation within corrections to address this cycle directly. By integrating wellness and comprehensive support systems into the fabric of our operations, we aim to equip returning citizens with the tools they need to make positive, informed decisions—thereby reducing the likelihood of reoffending.   This commitment to culture change in corrections is a cornerstone of our philosophy at Social Purpose Corrections. It is not limited to a single week; rather, it is a continuous effort that drives our initiatives and policies year-round. We are dedicated to pioneering innovations that make the corrections system more equitable and effective. Join us in this critical movement. Today, in #NorthCarolina, Governor Roy Cooper issued Executive Order 303 directing government coordination to improve #reentry for the formerly incarcerated. "As part of the Executive Order, North Carolina is joining #Reentry2030, a national initiative that aims to dramatically improve reentry success for people exiting prison and those under supervision." Last year, Missouri led the way as the first state committed to improving reintegration outcomes for every person leaving incarceration and those on supervision. Reentry 2030 is a national initiative led by the CSG Justice Center helping states boost access to reentry supports, clearing away unnecessary barriers, and advancing racial equity. On a mission to improve reentry outcomes by 2030, Gov. Mike Parson and former Department of Corrections Director Anne Precythe committed the 24th state to some ambitious goals: - 100 percent of people who are incarcerated and need career services receive them. - 85 percent of people who are incarcerated are employed within 30 days of release. - 80 percent of formerly incarcerated people maintain employment for at least 9 months after release. https://lnkd.in/eP5d6_vx

I read a report from The Associated Press recently that detailed the harrowing abuse and exploitation of incarcerated individuals in the South. It was like a gut punch. The fact that these atrocities still go on is unacceptable and absolutely reprehensible. For a moment, I felt deflated. Then I remembered that I have a voice and that I could use that voice to fight for meaningful change for a population of human beings that we still don’t care enough about. Exploiting the vulnerabilities of anyone for personal or professional advantage is morally indefensible. The roles available to those in prison should rehabilitate AND provide a pathway to a more promising future post-release. There can be no half-measures. As many of you know, it was a genuine second-chance opportunity that allowed me to change my life, and it included skill acquisition and education, fair treatment and compensation, access to post-release opportunities and reentry support, and the autonomy to make informed choices. This holistic approach is vital for the empowerment of incarcerated individuals, and we have an obligation to provide it. This is how we go forward. As we approach the possible reopening of Shuman Center, it’s clear that the path forward must prioritize the holistic development of our youth beyond mere incarceration. As an expert in program development through strategic collaboration, I advocate for integrating comprehensive supportive services for both juveniles and their families. The key to breaking the cycle of recidivism lies in addressing the root causes of youth behavior, many of which are deeply intertwined with family dynamics and trauma. I propose assigning life navigators—dedicated case managers—to each youth. These navigators will provide essential services, including partner referrals, program participation tracking, mentorship, and follow-ups for at least 6 to 12 months and beyond as needed. This structured support system ensures continuous engagement and addresses both immediate and long-term needs. Despite differing visions for the facility, it’s crucial to recognize that short-term detention does not equate to neglecting the broader needs of these young individuals. While Adelphoi focuses on immediate safety and court processing, integrating supportive services through third-party providers ensures that we don’t miss the opportunity to offer rehabilitation and positive development during this critical period. County Executive Sara Innamorato’s vision of holistic services, including mental health and educational opportunities, aligns perfectly with this approach. With the integration of wraparound services and experts, we can enhance service delivery and maintain rigorous oversight of programmatic activity and outcome metrics while addressing concerns about privatization, transparency, and accountability. Imagine the impact of a solution-based approach that transforms the Highland Detention Center from a place of mere confinement into a catalyst for positive change.
