The “digital divide” is a mostly invisible line between those who have meaningful access to digital technology and those who don’t. Call it perhaps “the other side of the digital tracks”. Just because access to the internet is available to many underprivileged people – on the phone, at home, at school or the local public library – does not mean they actually make full use of the digital technology to empower themselves and make their lives better. In this blog post, I explain a bit about how Relavanti can help in erasing the digital divide in Milwaukee's low and moderate income neighborhoods.

Families separated at the US-Mexico border from 2017 to 2021 by the Trump administration had no clear path for reconnecting. The Family Reunification Task Force needed a process to register qualifying separated parents, legal guardians, or children to receive assistance to locate and reunite with their family members in the United States. Working closely with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), TechFlow, Inc., and Eighty2degrees Design Studio we built together.gov, a multi-language platform thoughtfully designed using plain language, audio recordings of the content, and specific form functionality—multiple last name fields and alternative date formatting—to help these families find each other. To date, the site has facilitated around 3,000 successful family reunifications. We never lose sight of the fact that we’re building products and services for individuals and communities. This wasn’t just a project for us; it was a step toward making an unconscionable reality easier for impacted families to navigate and we’re honored to have participated in the work.
