What We Do Avenue Scholars provides comprehensive, individualized support services to help eligible students in Des Moines area high schools identify, prepare for, and ultimately enter financially sustaining, high-demand careers requiring an associate degree or less. Programming begins in the student’s junior year of high school and continues uninterrupted through postsecondary training and for six months following career entry. We’re so thrilled to share the latest results from the 2023-2024 MCAS, and they are truly remarkable! Students at UP are exceeding expectations, demonstrating that with the right support and equitable access to opportunities, they can achieve anything. Here are some highlights: 📈 Our 8th graders are among the fastest-growing students in the state, ranking #1 for growth in schools serving high-needs populations and #2 in all of Boston Public Schools for both ELA and math. 📝 40% of our 8th graders met or exceeded proficiency in ELA—nearly matching the state average, and far outpacing their district peers. 🏆 UP is among the top 5 schools in Dorchester for ELA and Math growth, especially among multilingual learners, who make up a third of our population and outperformed the state in ELA. Some of us are alumni of specific schools, having love for schools we graduated from, some are currently doing campus visits, having a list of schools they would love to attend and parents, likely have a list of schools you'd love your kids to show interest in. What does community look like? Today, I had the privilege and honor to open the floor and share a small part of my story with some amazing students from Santa Ana College about what community means to me. I reflected on my journey as a 1st-generation student, the child of immigrant parents who couldn’t pursue education because they spent their lives working. I was one of the few in my family to earn a degree, build a career, and give back to my community in the best way I know how. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my college peers, professors, family, and friends—they were my community. Today, I saw myself in these students: eager, driven, and full of potential. I remember being a community college student, relying on resources like EOP and CalWorks to navigate my academic journey. Being a full-time student, working multiple jobs, and raising a child as a single parent wasn’t easy. My story is just one of many, but it shows that with the right community, anything is possible. When we look at CSU graduation rates for transfer students—around 22% in two years and 80% in four—the gap between underrepresented minority students and others persists. A major factor? Students struggle to identify their community and find a sense of belonging. Today, my goal wasn’t to tell a sob story, but to offer guidance and a bit of light—hopefully from someone these students can relate to. A big thank you to Sergio Temores and Cesar Cervantes, M.S. So many many problems with this article! I hesitate to re-post it because I don't want to amplify its myths, but my hope is that doing so with some critique will help those of us in and around public education to practice resisting the eugenic logics and segregationist seductions of "gifted and talented" programs. I appreciate how gifted ed benefitted this individual author — I do — but the fact remains that gifted ed functions systemically as educational redlining, opportunity hoarding, intellectual apartheid, and applied eugenics. In this way, gifted ed is a tool of White supremacy. I'm a former GATE teacher so I know the system from the inside, and I've been studying it as a scholar and activist for decades. Gotta say, it's pretty disappointing the EdTrust chose to perpetuate so many myths here. (And it's even more disappointing that EdTrust deleted my comment containing these observations. Maybe they're not much interested in research, dialogue, or critique? Hmmm.) Unfortunately, this article will be used by folks with abundant unearned privileges to secure even more advantage by resisting longstanding and research-based calls to dismantle gifted ed, and instead just tinker with it a bit by admitting a few more tokenized BIPOC kids to make it look equitable (see part 5 of my article series where I address this directly). This is not a justice strategy; this is dominance dressed up as charity. In affluent communities, summer offers growth, learning, and exploration for students. However, many students in underserved areas miss out on structured, stimulating activities, leading to learning loss and diminished aspirations. The lack of summer enrichment continues inequality, leading to academic and emotional setbacks for students and reinforcing systemic barriers. It reminds us that opportunities are often reserved for the privileged, leaving others to navigate an exclusionary system. During the summer, when schools are closed, and many students face the risk of losing academic momentum, DBG steps in to provide vital support and enrichment. By maintaining a structured environment, DBG helps prevent summer learning loss, a phenomenon in which students, especially those from underserved communities, fall behind academically.
