Mental health is an issue of significant concern within the defence community, with studies showing that as many as 1 in 5 veterans experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions. It is imperative that we support our veterans and provide them with the resources they need to address these challenges. If you are a veteran struggling with mental health issues, or know someone who is, I urge you to seek help. It's important to note that seeking help for mental health issues is not a sign of weakness, but rather a crucial step towards healing and recovery. The stigma surrounding mental health in the military community must be tackled head-on, and open discussions about these issues should be encouraged. Additionally, the transition from military to civilian life can be particularly challenging for veterans, and it is during this period that they may need additional support. Organisations such as Help for Heroes and PTSD UK are dedicated to providing aid and understanding to veterans navigating these difficulties. Let's continue to raise awareness and support for mental health within the veteran community. 🌟🤲 In conclusion, the mental well-being of our veterans is a matter of utmost importance, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that they have access to the support and assistance they need. By advocating for mental health awareness and directing veterans to the appropriate resources, we can make a difference in the lives of those who have served our country. Together, let's stand in solidarity with our veterans and promote a culture of understanding and compassion. Defining success in veteran substance use treatment can be complex, but the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers a guiding framework. According to SAMHSA, successful recovery encompasses four key dimensions: Health, Home, Community, and Purpose. For veterans, these dimensions may develop at different rates and include coping with PTSD without substances, better emotional control, and finding a supportive community. It's important to remember that recovery is a non-linear process; setbacks, including relapse, are often part of the journey. Each step forward, even with occasional stumbles, contributes to overall success. At The Recovery Village, we're committed to supporting veterans through every stage of their recovery journey. If you or a veteran in your care is ready to start the path toward long-term recovery, contact us today. #Veterans #PTSD #SubstanceUseDisorder

For the brave men and women who have served our country, the battles they face often extend far beyond the frontlines. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) are two of the most significant challenges that veterans encounter upon returning home. San Antonio is a city with a deep connection to the military. There are over 250,000 veterans and 80,000 active-duty personnel calling it home. New Choices Treatment Center (NCTC) understands the importance of addressing the specific needs of this population. We are committed to addressing PTSD and addiction in veterans and helping them to reclaim their lives. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. What’s more, the Worldwide Mental Health Foundation reports that “in recent years there has been a clear increase in levels of stress and anxiety, as well as a rise in mental health disorders.” In the Armed Forces: * 1 in 4 active duty military members show signs of a mental health condition * 18.5% of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans have PTSD or depression * 20 + Veterans commit suicide each day And, fewer than 50 percent of Veterans in need receive mental health treatment. This is why it’s so important for family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to learn how and when to support a struggling Veteran. Take Mental Health First Aid for Veterans, Military Members and their Families to learn how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders using the “ALGEE” action plan: * Assess for risk of suicide or harm. * Listen non judgmentally. * Give reassurance and information. * Encourage appropriate professional help. * Encourage self-help and other support strategies. You know the saying “we are our brothers keeper?” So why are we willing in battle to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters when they need back up. Why is it so easy to ask for help on the battle field, and yet so hard to off it?’ These are the questions we need answering. The biggest battle is the one within. No one can help you if you do t radio for back up. Your people will not judge you. If they are your people they will be there in a heartbeat There is no one in this world exempt from PTS, anxiety or depression. There is no shame in it as we all are impacted in some way along our paths. Also addiction in all forms is a symptom of our issues. There is no shame in that also. We do what we think helps us get through our days……just to cope. Ending the stigma surrounding mental health in law enforcement, first responders, and veteran communities is crucial. We need to have difficult conversations to familiarize ourselves with mental health discussions and break down those barriers. Let's work together to create a safe and supportive environment for those who serve our communities and our country. Irish Angel is here for you. Never think that there is no one that won’t listen or care. We will!!! All of our board of Directors have have been effected in some way by PTS, addiction or suicide. They as well as myself have survived and thrived every day. You can too. Reach out. You matter!!! You are valued and loved. You got this.
