For parents and families navigating the complexities of a child's mental health issues, engagement and communication are key. Open and honest communication about values and experiences lays a foundation of trust and understanding. Supervising and guiding adolescents in decision-making can help them develop healthy coping strategies and confidence. Spending quality time together through shared activities strengthens the parent-child bond and provides emotional support. Being actively involved in school life, from participating in school activities to assisting with homework, shows commitment to their educational and emotional growth. Volunteering at the school not only allows parents to be more attuned to their child's social environment but also fosters a sense of community. Regular communication with teachers and school administrators helps ensure that the child's needs are met both academically and emotionally. At Avery's House, we encourage this holistic approach, recognizing the vital role families play in supporting the mental health journey of their children. Together, we can create a nurturing environment for our children to thrive. “I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship.” — Amy March, from Little Women Supporting mental health in early childhood benefits adults and children, now and throughout their lives! Emotional well-being is something we strive for every day. It is not something we achieve and “now we have it” (like learning to ride a bike)! Of course, our emotions change - and so do the factors contributing to them. Triggers from past events in our lives can “take us back” to both challenging times and happy experiences. We adults often need support from the special people in our lives, especially when we are triggered. And children need our support even more! When we support social emotional learning in early childhood education settings, we not only help them handle the moment. We are also helping them develop skills they will need and use throughout their lifetimes. Let’s commit to nurture children with connection, calming, compassion and capacity-building! In family therapy sessions, it's not uncommon for a child to open up and engage, only to shut down once their parent or guardian joins the session. This shift often occurs because the child knows they'll have to return home with their parent, whereas the therapist won't be there. Bridging this understanding gap about therapy and mental health between families and children is crucial, and often requires more education for the adults than the children themselves. Join us in exploring the strategies for enhancing mental health education for families. Follow us and be part of the conversation on promoting mental health literacy among adults. Let's work together to empower families with the knowledge and understanding needed to support their children's mental health. #FamilyTherapy #JoinArPA #ArPAStrong #ArPAStrong
