The Skies Demystified on Advanced Air Mobility! 🛩️⚡#EAS2024 This past weekend I attended the Vertical Flight Society's 18th Annual Electric Aircraft Symposium which brought together industry giants and innovators developing vertical-conventional-short take-off and landing (#eVTOL, eCTOL or eSTOL) technologies. As we witness rapid progress in the AAM industry, Coalition for Reimagined Mobility's focus on crafting thoughtful transportation policy that puts people first and enables innovation provided a good lens to view the discussions. 📖 As a city planner, it was fascinating to hear about the growth and decline of publicly subsidized short-hop flight services in San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago in the 1960s and 70s. It poses the question of whether affordable eVTOL services can be part of a city’s mobility toolkit or whether it remains an exclusive mode. 🏗️ As eVTOL designs near final certifications, infrastructure to land and park these aircrafts is getting more attention. The development of vertiports carries a lot of parallels to how scooters and urban logistics redefined the curb. 🔋 It is also truly impressive to see the rapid developments in propulsion systems, battery types and alternative fuels that are shaping the future of flight. Kudos to VFS in bringing innovators from Wisk, Joby Aviation, Amprius Technologies, Inc., Saft, Textron Aviation, magniX, Rolls-Royce, Ampaire and Whisper Aero among others together. The sky is no longer the limit – it's just the beginning.✈️ #ElectricAircraft #Innovation #SustainableAviation #FutureOfFlight #Mobility P.S: This image from NASA captured multiple use cases and aircraft technologies.

Zero-emission aviation is already a reality! Great to experience my first time inside a certified fully-electric aircraft (the Pipistrel Velis Electro) when envAero visited the Sustainable Skies World Summit in Farnborough today. Coincidentally, this aircraft has the exact same ChadeMo charge port and an almost identical battery capacity as the Nissan Leaf I drove to the event in this morning… Much in common with Future of Flight UAS and eVTOL operations, to enable Jet Zero at scale the aviation industry still faces some huge and exciting challenges to overcome, including technological, safety and economic regulation, supporting infrastructure (ground, airspace, ATM, energy) and economic. But sitting inside this operational aircraft I’ve never been more convinced that together we will all make it happen. Now I just wish that I could fly it home! 😎 Big thanks to Stuart Anselm and Kerry Wilmot at NEBOair Ltd for the cockpit tour. #SSWS #SustainableSkies #JetZero #FutureofFlight #FutureFlight #Sustainability

"Vertiports" is one of those new buzzwords associated with eVTOL (or is it UAM, or AAM, or ....?) - and apparently #eVTOL will land and take off from Vertiports. Apart from delivering energy differently (eg fast charger instead of a fuel pump) what else will they feature that makes them so different? We have a massive network of airports and heliports around the world already, with existing infrastructure. Do we really need #Vertiports? Perhaps Skyports Infrastructure, Skyportz®, SkyScape Vertiports, UAM Vertiports, Urban-Air Port, UrbanV etc might have some ideas? Or even the eVTOL developers like Archer, Eve Air Mobility, Joby Aviation, Lilium, Vertical Aerospace, Volocopter, Wisk etc? #Helicopter #MarketIntelligence

Reality is setting in on Advanced Air Mobility. RAM studies predict the shortest useful RAM flight is 125 miles, and above 350 miles RAM loses to lower cost of airlines. So here is the issue, UAM startups said batteries are the way to go because of the short distance/flight time. The all electric vehicles need to look at range-extension solutions which has profound impact on their designs. We still see the short term winners as hybrid electric powerplants for existing aircraft models, e.g. Ampaire and Zeroavia, and hybrid electric aircraft with special flight characteristics, e.g. Electra Aero and Tidal. And then there is the matter of speed. We have found that "slow" aircraft like a Caravan lose their appeal once flights get to 200 miles. The Pilatus PC-12 and Kind Air B200 provide a great platform for 150-300 mile segments.

In Germany, this innovation will likely struggle due to our numerous regulations. I don’t want to sound negative, but we need to seriously work on smart regulations rather than over-regulation. One example: Germany needs a lot of apartments, but building them quickly is almost impossible because of the many regulations. The process of obtaining a B-Plan (development plan) is very slow, with little automation. Everything depends on civil servants who are often overworked or sometimes don’t work efficiently. In 1990, we had around 5,000 regulations in the construction industry, and today, that number has grown to over 20,000. In contrast, countries like Denmark and the Netherlands have implemented more efficient regulatory frameworks that balance high standards with streamlined processes, promoting both sustainability and innovation Let’s change Germany for good. We need a change. You know it! I know it!

The concept of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) has become a viable economic proposition as a result of rapid technological development. People are continuously looking for better and safer methods to travel to work and other locations as road congestion worsens, particularly in megacities. The introduction of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is one of the primary factors encouraging Unmanned Aerial Mobility. The Unmanned Aerial Mobility market framework necessitates architecture, technology, and business integration. Similarly, as the sky ports demand a lot of power and each port is supposed to have a charging station, architecture is crucial. For example, other than the established players like Boeing and Airbus, new entrants with suitable technological expertise seem to grow rapidly such as Uber, Joby Aviation, and Kitty Hawk. The Uber Elevate will have two business models- Uber Air and Uber Copter. Whilst there are many great posts on LinkedIn, I have watched with a degree of bemusement, some of the discussions on eVTOLs over the past number of months. As is perhaps always the case with novel technologies and nascent market opportunities, there are proponents and naysayers, hope, hype, disillusionment, mistrust, learning, misinformation (some honest, some perhaps less so) and unfortunately also tit for tat banter that I suspect ultimately benefits nobody. I’ve therefore decided to try to bring a different and hopefully more measured voice to the debate. I’ve spent nearly thirty years (gosh how time flies) in the aviation industry, spanning almost every engineering discipline across programmes in every phase of the life cycle. Millions of people have flown on products I’ve been lucky enough to have had a small hand in. Most of the time, they have performed flawlessly, but I’ve also learnt some big lessons from the hard knocks when things haven’t quite gone to plan. I’ve certainly made my own fair share of mistakes along the way and as the saying goes, good judgement comes from experience; experience comes from bad judgement. I’m lucky to have worked with, and learnt from, a wide range of amazing people. In trying to bring a perspective, I have perhaps an advantage in this stage of my career that, rightly or wrongly, I don’t feel I have anything to prove. Aviation is going through unprecedented change – some good, some less so. My last nearly ten years has been at the centre of electric and sustainable aviation, working for and closely collaborating with some of the best companies, big and small. I am grateful to be at the exciting, fast-paced pioneering heart of this transformative period but am also extremely conscious that this is a privilege and many people working in the industry are not nearly so lucky. So, back to the reason for this post. Some of you may have seen the attached video, filmed earlier this year at the Farnborough Airshow. It hopefully provides a starting point on some of our thinking and what we are up to at Vertical. However, this debate should not just be about one company. So, what are the hot topics you would like to discuss? What are the questions, opportunities, myths or concerns you would like to probe? Are they about aircraft design configurations or technologies, market opportunities and customer perspectives, regulation, finance or any part of the wider ecosystem, different business approaches and company strategies, the role governments can play, cross-sector expertise, talent and what it is like to work in start-ups / scale-ups vs. established enterprises, or something completely different? I certainly don’t promise to have all the answers but am looking forward to seeing what questions get posed and hopefully sparking many constructive and interesting debates.
