Earlier this month, AVIAN's CEO Kevin Switick and Senior Systems Engineer John DeHart attended the 34th Annual INCOSE International Symposium in Dublin, Ireland, where John presented his innovative work on leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) for direct interaction with SysML v2. John's paper delves into how LLMs can simplify the manipulation of system models, democratize the design process, and introduce a new era of efficiency in systems engineering. His insights highlight the potential for LLMs to bridge complex system models and user-friendly interfaces, fostering a more accessible and accelerated design approach. And while they were there, Kevin and John made sure to experience some local culture, including a well-deserved Irish pint! 🍻 Looking forward to bringing these innovative ideas back to AVIAN. #AVIAN #INCOSE2024 #SysMLv2 #LLMs #Innovation #SystemsEngineering #Dublin #ThoughtLeadership

'What Does #ScienceCommunication Really Mean?' is one of the questions I will be taking to the 17th European #Geoparks Conference. Is it just a matter of semantics? How can we connect science and society? Why do we need to rethink strategies for better engagement? #EGN24 #UNESCOGlobalGeoparks #EuropeanGeoparks

We've found that #TeamTopologies provides an answer to the problem of how to optimise for both the business and the people in it. Or perhaps, more accurately, it provides a framework with which to address the problem.
We are drawn to #TeamTopologies not only for its structural approach to encouraging a faster flow of value through an organisation but also for the humane intent which is fundamental to the framework. The 'humane' aspects of mastery, autonomy, and purpose - drawn from Ryan and Deci's self-determination theory - align nicely with our own work on engineering culture. Last week, Simon Holmes and I attended the excellent Fast Flow Conf in London, followed by my own participation on a panel organised by Ox-LiT in Oxford with an audience interested in learning about people's experiences of working with the Team Topolopgioes approach. So while the theme was fresh in my mind, I took the opportunity to explore the humane nature of Team Topologies in today's article: https://lnkd.in/gvPmDJTB

After reading this I went to the Smell Explorer here: https://lnkd.in/gmXz_CcF It was like a whole new experience of what search can be. ChatGPT is a complete dead end in comparison. We have to believe that this is what the web can be, and that generative AI is just a phase until we figure out the proper use for machine learning. Sometimes I despaired that knowledge graphs provided anything for users in terms of an interface which unstructured data could not. Browsing by smell — wild — completely changes this for me. The search is not perfect but you are exploring information at a level of abstraction which purely flat statistical inference cannot give you. Totally changes the experience.
One of the more exciting projects recently that deploys #GraphDB to quietly do its #semantic magic in the background is Odeuropa - the #knowledgegraph of smells. Our final post for the year, prepared by Teodora Petkova, explores the interdisciplinary threads woven together to produce the European Olfactory Knowledge Graph (EOKG): https://hubs.ly/Q02dyNWg0

In this episode, we discuss Giraffe: Adventures in Expanding Context Lengths in LLMs by Arka Pal, Deep Karkhanis, Manley Roberts, Samuel Dooley, Arvind Sundararajan, Siddartha Naidu. The paper reviews techniques for overcoming the fixed context length limitation in large language models like LLaMA or LLaMA 2 by modifying positional encodings and introduces a new truncation strategy. It presents three novel tasks for evaluation, finding that linear scaling of contexts at evaluation time improves model performance, especially with a truncated positional basis. The researchers release new models named Giraffe with extended context lengths, along with datasets and code on HuggingFace to encourage further exploration in context length extrapolation.

Happy to announce that our recent submission on LLM for world event prediction has been accepted to #iclr2024 ! AutoCast++: Enhancing World Event Prediction with Zero-shot Ranking-based Context Retrieval. Qi Yan, Raihan Seraj, Eric Jiawei He, Lili Meng, Tristan Sylvain. This paper uses LLMs to answer event prediction questions. The method uses a ranking-retrieval approach to find relevant news snippets, which are summarized and used for question answering. This paper was done with Borealis interns Qi Yan and Raihan Seraj.
