I was delighted to attend last week's Farnborough International Airshow to engage with the representatives of leading aerospace companies and to promote the Polish aerospace and aviation sector. Thousands of exhibitors and guests descended on the halls and surrounding grounds of the Farnborough airport (these days servicing business aviation) for five days of exchanges, networking and measuring the pulse of this critically important industry in these uncertain, turbulent times. In particular, I had the honour to inaugurate an event showcasing the Polish Aviation Valley - Aviation Valley | Dolina Lotnicza - a cluster of aviation companies both small and large, now in the third decade of development. In my opening remarks I said: "→ The Polish aviation industry spans well over 80 years of scientific and engineering work, centred in Poland’s south-east regions. Cities like Świdnik or Mielec are the cradles of Polish aviation and innovation. Last year, the Polish Aviation Valley, with Rzeszów as its centre, celebrated 20 years since its inception. → The region has since become a crucible of various undertakings involving international business partners. It was not a lucky coincidence, but rather a matter of a conscious choice. The Aviation Valley owes its remarkable success to the combination of factors: highly skilled engineering staff, a deep pool of talent attracted by leading academic and scientific institutions, as well as a pro-business mindset of local authorities. → As a result, today the Aviation Valley is an indispensable part of not just local, but national economy. It contributes to Poland’s image as a country of innovation and engineering prowess, on par with similar clusters around the globe." These words of praise are well deserved! I am grateful to the hosts Aviation Valley | Dolina Lotnicza and Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, as well as Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) London Office for the opportunity to represent Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London at this important event. Special thanks go out to Rafal Owczarek and Karol Cienkus, Ph.D. I will finish on a more personal note: it was great fun to once again, albeit for just one day, to become part of the global community of aviation and aerospace professionals. Indeed, aviation sector was one of my specialties when working for the U.S. Commercial Service some ten years ago (a big shout out to Brenda VanHorn, my boss at that time!). This experience really helped to keep up with the industry representatives as they presented their products and solutions!

“Developing the future workforce” is the tagline that the Global Aviation and Aerospace Skills Taskforce #GAAST operated under this week in São Paulo hosted by Ana Benevides and the great team at ANAC - Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil This coalition of #States and #Industry is focused on: 1. Creating a #ValueProposition representative of the industry ✈️ 2. Best practice in #outreach and #attraction programs that can be shared globally 📞 3. How to #retain people who have joined the industry 🤝 4. Changing the #culture and improving the #workplace environment 🔄 5. Creating a vision of the #future of work in aviation 👁️🗨️ Most importantly it has created a platform in which all are equally represented and able to share experiences, practices, ideas, visions and more in an open and transparent way leading to developing tangible outputs that will support the changes needed by the sector to face the future. With Fiona Hau (née Douglas) and Francine Carron we had the pleasure to Chair the #GAAST and work with this amazing group of individuals who all believe that collaboratively we will make the needle move and create a more sustainable future for the aviation and aerospace sectors. 🌿 Many thanks to Luiz Ricardo de Souza Nascimento, Dr Rannia Leontaridi OBE and Tiago Pereira for your inspiring opening and closing statements and to all of you for your time and commitment in this endeavour! #Africa is still coming to grips with the questions it cannot answer about a common air transport market. The arguments against it are the same as existed in Europe. Now more than 30 years later - what do we have in Europe? pretty much you can get from anywhere to anywhere easily. A dominant carrier who is actually quite cheap. And across the board air fares fell. Guess what happened? The #public travelled and Europe prospered. Economic prosperity followed. Is there a lesson here? Of course. So please let's make #SAATM a reality. #Airlines
The aero-politics panel at Aviation AFRICA Summit & Exhibition 2024 was a big talking point at this event with panellists calling for the African Civil Aviation Commission AFCAC to be given the "teeth" to make the African Union's Single African Air Traffic Market (SAATM) happen. The creation in Africa of a single, deregulated air transport market with open competition is a dream of many liberalists keen to see this vast continent unlock its potential. But for many countries and airlines, open competition is scary, offering the real prospect of many being crushed by the bigger and richer. So, hearing Poppy Khoza, DG of SACAA, Capt. Gilbert M Kibe, Barry Kashambo, and moderator Vijay Poonoosamy offering a route forward to unlock SAATM was a breath of fresh air. Alan Peaford, MBE Mark Brown Clare B.
