Europe’s Airports Face Critical Challenges for Future Viability⭕️ At the 34th ACI EUROPE Annual Congress in Istanbul, Olivier Jankovec highlighted key issues for Europe’s airports: investment constraints, regulatory hurdles, and the need to decouple financial viability from volume growth. ✈️ New Market Reality: Growth disparities are evident, with markets like Albania and Greece booming, while Finland and Germany lag behind. 💸 Revenue Imbalances: Despite an €8 billion profit in 2023, airports face financial strain. Increased charges are crucial to support €360 billion investment needs by 2040. ⭕️Regulatory Challenges: Jankovec calls for a regulatory reset, criticizing decisions in Ireland and France for favoring airlines over public and environmental interests. 🌍 Decoupling Growth from Viability: With rising costs due to decarbonization, increasing unit revenues is essential for financial health. Lufthansa’s new "Environmental Cost Surcharge" is a step in this direction. ✅Operational Efficiency: Emphasizing digitalization, AI, and slot rule reforms to boost efficiency and service quality. #Aviation #ACI2024ist #SustainableTravel #AirportChallenges #FutureOfFlight Amy Leete Agata Łyżnik

2023 has seen Europe’s airports forging ahead with their traffic recovery - with some far exceeding pre-pandemic passenger volumes, others just getting there, and still too many well below. While demand has generally remained resilient in the face of inflationary pressures (now receding) and external shocks (all geopolitics), policy and regulatory risks have increased. Crucially, the fundamental and urgent transformation required by decarbonistion still lies ahead… As 2024 is about to start, we at ACI EUROPE look forward to keep serving our airport members and World Business Partners - working closely with all European & Pan-European institutions as well as Governments across the continent and industry stakeholders. Wishing you all the very best for the New Year - with special thoughts for our airport members from Ukraine 🇺🇦 and Israel 🇮🇱, hoping 2024 will bring them peace. FOR AND WITH AIRPORTS - ALWAYS

[PRESS RELEASE] Presenting the cornerstone State of the Industry at the opening of the 34th ACI EUROPE Annual Congress and General Assembly in Istanbul, Director General Olivier Jankovec addressed Europe’s airports’ new normal and key financial and operational challenges ahead. While the latest traffic data shows that passenger volumes across the European airport network have now just surpassed their pre pandemic (2019) levels, and the peak summer months promise to be the busiest ever, wide performance gaps amongst national and individual airport markets are part of the industry’s new normal – with Jankovec stating ‘there is no question we live in a whole new world’. Airports face several key challenges: squeezes on investments, regulatory resets, capacity limitations and the mother of all challenges - decarbonisation. Jankovec pointed to the need for airports to become the masters of their own capacity and performance, as a matter of ‘environmental efficiency, connectivity and service quality.’ Read more at: https://lnkd.in/e685Z--c #ACI2024IST

LIVE FROM ROUTES EUROPE: Michael Stanton-Geddes, Director of Economics & Competition at ACI EUROPE, delivered a keynote address during Routes Europe 2024 in Aarhus, Denmark, discussing the latest trends currently impacting the European aviation industry. ✈ He highlighted the uneven character of air traffic recovery across Europe. While overall traffic nears pre-pandemic levels, only 44% of airports have fully rebounded. Southern & eastern Europe are seeing a stronger growth, indicating a shift in traffic flows. The market is transforming due to increased seasonality, a focus on international and leisure travel, and consolidation towards aircraft with a smaller passenger capacity. He also underlined the need for policy adjustments to support airports in adapting to these dynamics. Click here to read the full article from Aviation Week Network: https://shorturl.at/aeux9

What a week! I got to welcome 12 of our A4E CEOs to Brussels with the rest of the A4E team for our CEO reception and Steering Board. On top of that, I got to moderate a press conference with journalists from some the leading Brussels-based and international outlets that help drive the agenda here. It's an immense privilege to have so many CEOs from our sector come to town and it's important for them to shine a light on the realities of running such complex businesses for policymakers and the media. We're very lucky at A4E that we have a set of CEOs who are heavily engaged with out association. While they of course don't have the time to dive into the granular elements of every policy issue (that's our job), their visit underlines the importance they attach to what goes on here. After all, airline liberalisation three decades ago came from the EU and has unlocked affordable air travel for millions of Europeans across the continent. This week's meeting was all about A4E's priorities for the coming EU term. You will see a joint letter they have signed which sets those priorities out clearly. Competitiveness really does sit at the heart of those priorities: ✈ reforming airspace makes airlines more competitive 🌍 putting aviation in the Clean Industrial Deal makes airlines more competitive, 💹 completing the Single Aviation Market makes airlines more competitive. Meanwhile, I'll probably take it easy this weekend, ready to go back exploring new and creative ways to tell the wonderful story of Europe's airline industry. #flyingforourfuture #CEOs #EU
