🗳 Support for #NigelFarage ’s party may have cost the #Conservatives up to 80 seats, handing #Labour a #supermajority As a miraculous reversal of #polling fortunes failed to materialise for the #Tories in the opening weeks of the #election campaign, the message from Conservative headquarters switched to a warning: “A vote for Reform is a vote for #Labour.” With the results in, the outgoing government has been proven bitterly correct. Nigel Farage’s party gained the third-largest share of the national vote, at 14.3 per cent. While the mechanics of first past the post turned this into just five seats, #Reform ’s impact in the House of Commons will perhaps more keenly be felt by the seats not occupied by Conservatives because of them. The Telegraph analysis shows the party’s presence on the #ballot may have cost the Conservatives 80 seats. Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/eqyN-mTz

Interesting facts Charles-Henry, thanks for sharing.
The far-right RN was defeated yesterday but the problem is far from over. They got 37% of the popular vote. 37% !! The "winning left" got 26%... Note 2 things: 1) The specificities of the French lower house voting system: One party rises from 33% to 37% between the 2 rounds and move from rank #1 to rank #3. Another one (left / far left) declines from 28% to 25% a move from rank #2 to rank #1 2) If you take out far-right RN and far-left/left, the true "traditional / establishment" parties are less than 30% of votes... (despite unprecedented turnout) Source image: JohannesBorgen

Help! What should I vote in number 17 (CUREPIPE AND MIDLANDS)? 1. 1x Reform 1x Bruneau 1x MMM* 2. 2x Reform 1x Bruneau* 3. 3x Reform * specify which candidates are the most favorite so as not to divide votes.

Need to catch up on your summer reading? Brookings always has some interesting reads… In the Brookings volume called “USMCA Forward 2024: Gearing Up for a Successful Review in 2026” has a number of noteworthy chapters. I found the final chapter on the USMCA Review and upcoming elections, and a path forward, to be a good read in and of itself. In this chapter, Joshua Meltzer and Steve Verheul suggest what could provide good footing leading to a successful Review. For the US, Canada and Mexico to agree on types of issues to be part of the Review (and propose that the three Parties should careful to not include revising dispute settlement decisions by USMCA panelists. They also suggest that Parties should at the forefront of the Review, to agree to clear the table so to speak on what issues should not be part of a Review. They highlight a preferred outcome that the US, Canada and Mexico agree to an extension of the Agreement and use the Review to begin a process to address new issues with an agreed agenda on a forward-looking workplan. 🚣♂️

The British political system has been described as ‘elected dictatorship’ (Lord Hailsham). With a workable majority, a government can, subject to international obligations, do what it likes (AV Dicey). And it can abrogate those international obligations too. With its majority Labour can do what it chooses. Its power is, theoretically, unlimited. And Labour got 33.7% of the vote. And the turnout was 60%. So a government with unlimited powers over the future of this country was elected by 20% of registered voters. It’s an uncomfortable fact. One that brings out understandable arguments for proportional representation and enforced voting. But there’s another aspect to this; alienation. Democracy isn’t a pencil mark on a piece of paper every five years, it is the active involvement of citizens in shaping their own lives and communities. Politics must stop being seen as something done by others that happens to us. #britishgeneralelection #politics #constitution

What's the opposite of the Connecticut General Assembly's long session? The short session that occurs in even-numbered years. During short sessions running from February to early May, legislators primarily focus on adjustments to the state budget and address time-sensitive issues, while new bills unrelated to the budget usually require committee approval to be considered. #civicssaturday #ConnecticutPolitics #CivicEngagement #GeneralAssembly #LegislativeProcess
