Who Watches YouTube? The global population is 8.1 bn. According to GMI reports, 2.7 bn people worldwide use YouTube per month. India holds the title of most YouTube users at 462 mn out of its 1.4 bn population. Five billion videos are watched and shared in one day. This is the statistics which we can access on GMI. Remember when youth non-fiction shows were a major trend in India? They provided engaging, relatable content that resonated with the younger audience. However, this genre has almost disappeared from TV and OTT platforms in India, leaving a significant gap in the market. While task-based reality shows like Roadies once dominated, the shift in viewing habits has made these formats less relevant. A few years ago, Netflix attempted to revive this format with Social Currency, blending elements of Roadies and Bigg Boss and featuring big influencers. However, the format had serious loopholes. Being involved in the post-production of the show and with 8 seasons of Bigg Boss experience, I spotted these flaws immediately and, unfortunately, they couldn’t be fixed in post, which contributed to the show’s failure. Meanwhile, creators like MrBeast and Sidemen are making millions with task-based content on YouTube, capitalizing on the platform’s ability to engage a global audience. In contrast, we’re still stuck with outdated methods for TV and OTT shows. Youth non-fiction content has almost disappeared here because younger viewers are shifting away from TV and OTT platforms, which often require a subscription fee. Instead, they are getting their daily dose of free, high-quality entertainment from YouTube and Instagram. If we want to revive this genre, it needs to be accessible on YouTube, where the youth spend their time. Production houses should collaborate with YouTubers, invest in high-quality, relatable content, and leverage their massive followings.
