Agriculture is one of the essential sectors of the South African economy. The sector has grown significantly over time and created much-needed jobs in rural South Africa. There remains enormous potential for growth in the sector in the coming years. From now on, we need a sense of stability and dedication to the relentless implementation of the Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan. This plan should remain the primary programme for the government to drive inclusive growth in South Africa's agriculture. Notably, the protection of strong property rights and the continuous release of government land to appropriately selected beneficiaries, with title deeds, are essential steps in driving inclusive growth in South Africa's agriculture. Other critical interventions that are commodity-specific are contained in the Master Plan. This is what we need for the new administration as a sector. In thinking about the coalition government, these are the fundamental aspects that should be reflected on for the sector and its growth potential by the political leaders of various parties. The current leadership at the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development remain in office until a new government is formed. A lot about the political leadership of the DALRRD in the new administration remains unknown.

We had an enjoyable time at Moody's Ratings (South Africa) Macro conference in Johannesburg on Tuesday. In the discussion, we highlighted the progressed South Africa's agriculture has made over the past few decades, supported by improvements in productivity on the back of seed-science and climate-smart agriculture practices, that also boost resilience. We also stressed that South Africa's agricultural output is expected to grow by roughly 30% in the next six to seven years, making logistics and export market expansion essential for competitiveness. We also underscored the need for land reform to increase Black farmers’ participation in commercial agriculture.

Exciting news from Kenya's agricultural sector! The country is embarking on a transformative journey by focusing on the empowerment of small-scale farmers, pastoralists, and fisherfolk. With around 4.5 million small-scale farmers contributing to 63% of national produce, the emphasis is on elevating their incomes and fostering economic and social development. The commitment to transitioning from diversified subsistence production to specialized, market-oriented output in higher-yield value chains is a pivotal step towards sustainability and increased food supply. By 2050, Africa's population is projected to reach 2.5 billion, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity to transform its agricultural landscape into a global powerhouse for #foodsecurity. 🌍 Investing in African agriculture is an investment in the future, aligning with 13 out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet, despite a shared political vision for African agriculture, global investment lags behind. African countries have committed to allocating at least 10% of national budgets to agriculture through the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program, but the follow-through is lacking. I'll be a speaker during the 7th AgriFin Learning Event (ALE) - session 1 scheduled for 7 November 2023. Topic for discussion for this session will be on collaborative efforts towards actualising a WRS financing solution: Is Kenya ready? The Government of Kenya has prioritised implementation and rollout of a warehouse receipt financing solution and seeks to promote the adoption and use of storage services offered by licensed warehouses, impact of which are geared towards:         i.        reduction of post-harvest losses through access to licensed storage facilities.        ii.        managing price volatility for smallholders during glut.       iii.        access to formal credit as transaction data is readily available and warehouse receipts as collateral. On Land Amalgamation There's so much arable agricultural land outside of cities of Africa that anyone peddling this idea that agricultural land is grossly subdivided is only reasoning from a textbook perspective or at best a pedestrian view of agriculture. Akeen to what Robert Yawe would call NGOs mentality. Anyone keen on improving productivity of agricultural land in Africa should ensure adequate resources, financing and market access for farmers and not pursuing the land amalgamation agenda. It's not realistic and out of touch with the reality but with hidden motives. This is what probably gave birth to the forceful affordable housing Agenda by the Ruto regime.
