Agriculture is one of the essential sectors of the South African economy. The sector has grown significantly over time and created much-needed jobs in rural South Africa. There remains enormous potential for growth in the sector in the coming years.
From now on, we need a sense of stability and dedication to the relentless implementation of the Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan. This plan should remain the primary programme for the government to drive inclusive growth in South Africa's agriculture.
Notably, the protection of strong property rights and the continuous release of government land to appropriately selected beneficiaries, with title deeds, are essential steps in driving inclusive growth in South Africa's agriculture.
Other critical interventions that are commodity-specific are contained in the Master Plan.
This is what we need for the new administration as a sector. In thinking about the coalition government, these are the fundamental aspects that should be reflected on for the sector and its growth potential by the political leaders of various parties.
The current leadership at the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development remain in office until a new government is formed. A lot about the political leadership of the DALRRD in the new administration remains unknown.
