This Men's Mental Health Week, we are reflecting on 'On Being a Man' by David Torrance, Sandy Campbell, John Carnochan, and Pete Seaman. This compelling book delves deep into the evolving concept of masculinity and its impact on Scottish men today. 'On Being a Man' brings together four distinguished voices to explore the state of Scottish men, their personal journeys and the pressing issues they face. The narrative tackles the dynamic roles men play in modern society—how they engage in relationships, raise children and define family. It sheds light on the stark contrast between the expectations placed on men today and those of forty years ago. While celebrating the positive transformations in men's roles, the book doesn’t shy away from confronting the darker aspects of Scottish masculinity. It addresses the harsh realities of drinking, violence and abusive behaviour among some men. These are tough topics, but essential for fostering a broader dialogue on men's mental health and societal expectations. This week is Men's Heath Week! 👨⚕️🩺 10th - 16th June marks the week where we all raise awareness of Men's Health and Mates in Mind are one of the companies at the forefront of raising awareness. From mental health to physical health, everything is important, especially when working in high risk situations like on a construction site. 🚧👷🏗️ Accidents at work, suicides and health conditions developed from working conditions are all major situations that affect men's health and they are not spoken about enough and the stigma that has developed regarding the shame of speaking about health and listening to our bodies and minds is only growing stronger the longer that they are not spoken about more! If you're not feeling well, go to the doctor. If you are struggling mentally, speak to someone about it. If you see someone else that is struggling or isn't well, speak to them and encourage them to speak to you or seek help. Don't neglect your health and lets help to reduce the stigma and the shocking statistics regarding poor health in construction. 🗣️💭 #Men'sHealthWeek #Construction #MentalHealth

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and NC State just released the findings of a recent study done by professors, Nils Peterson and Joey Pitchford, confirming that people who seek out nature experiences like bird-watching and nature walking report higher levels of well-being and lower levels of distress. These findings are significant given that bird-watching in particular is a very accessible experience, even in urban areas. Peterson, a WakeUP Wake County Board Member, highlighted the importance of these results, especially for younger generations who have struggled with pandemic-related stress, “My personal belief is that birding had such a wonderful effect for two reasons: (1) the practice encouraged people to be purposeful and more immersed in nature while spending time outside, (2) birds are pleasant to watch due to their beautiful colors and entertaining behaviors." Smart Growth development takes into consideration the physical and mental health needs of residents as a key component to planning. Walking, biking, and access to nature like greenways and bird watching all help create community well-being.
