There has been a rise in phishing scams lately both in frequency and in sophistication. Scammers are starting to leverage voice changers and simulators to replicate other accents to support their scam. - You will not be phoned by your bank. If you feel like you are, look up your banks details online and contact them yourself directly (don't use a number provided by the person contacting you) - Your bank doesn't need you to sign in to avoid being locked out by clicking a link in a text. - Your Toll/Linkt/Coles/Woolworths etc accounts do not have any credits applied via clicking a link, nor are they about to be suspended unless you click a link. No amount of free credits is worth losing your hard earned cash. - Microsoft won't call you about a virus or an issue with your machine. - Amazon won't call you about a charge being applied nor will they call you about renewing membership. - Never give ANYONE a code sent via text or email. If in doubt look up the organisation and contact them directly through their official means. This post isn't about clicks or likes, it's about keeping you and those around you safe from having their identities and/or money stolen. Please repost, share, add to this message because from what I am seeing these scams are getting more sophisticated through new technology. Please set some time in your calendar every 2-3 months to refresh yourself on current scams and how to avoid them. It may seem tedious but 15 minutes every few months may save you months/years of stress. If you or someone you know has received a scam message. You can report it here https://lnkd.in/gswWZDgh You don't need to have lost money to do this report. If you or someone you know has been impacted by a scam go here and follow the recommendations. https://lnkd.in/gvC3qgJz Prevention is better than cure so please take a moment to repost this and hopefully we can prevent some of these incidents. Then please setup a reoccurring reminder every 2 months to refresh your knowledge on scams.

The wide world of #scams is expanding fast. Unfortunately, the current anti fraud tools and defense mechanisms deployed by financial institutions cannot do anything to stop this onslaught. The traditional anti fraud tools are there to protect the financial institution because that was the point of attack. For scams, now the customer is contacted directly and most often customers willingly part with their money; without any warning mechanism.

Welcome to Scam World. Not long ago, online scams were much easier to spot. Nowadays, the victims of internet fraud are more likely to be people who grew up online. In 2023, for the first time, 18- to 24-year-olds lost more money to scams than any other age group, according to the Better Business Bureau. Being digitally native doesn’t inoculate you; in fact, it makes you a target. https://lnkd.in/dRVMt5NS

Writing a noncrypto security post :D I came across an interesting scam circulating through the website https://indianicerok[.]com/CyVfDT, and I wanted to alert everyone about it. The scam revolves around a fabricated news story titled "Ranveer management refuses to comment on the scandal surrounding its show 'The Ranveer,'" which falsely portrays a feud between Vineeta Singh and Ranveer Allahbadia. The blog (check screenshot), claims that the show took down the story but they managed to publish it. The blog then fabricates statements attributed to Vineeta Singh, suggesting she can turn 26,000 rupees into a million in 3-4 months (which she never said), leading unsuspecting users to a link intended to scam their money. This scam follows a strategic narrative: 1. Attract Attention: Exploiting India's interest in sensational news, particularly involving famous personalities, the scammer carefully chose characters to capture attention. 2. Exploit Greed: With attention secured, the scam redirects users to a fake website, preying on their greed for quick wealth. 3. Target Vulnerable Audience: The scam targets individuals who may not be tech-savvy and still believe in get-rich-quick schemes promoted by wealthy individuals. It's important to stay vigilant and cautious online to avoid falling victim to such scams. And these criminals can be avoided by awareness. Feel free to share if you like it. #scams #cybercrime #fraud

📣 Americans lost $1.1 billion to impersonation scams 📣 The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported over $1.1 billion in losses due to impersonation scams in the U.S. last year, a significant increase from 2020. ℹ️ Scammers often use phone calls, emails, and text messages, with a growing trend in email and text message scams. The scams range from fake account security alerts and subscription renewals to bogus legal issues and package delivery problems. 👉 The FTC advises avoiding unsolicited URLs, being wary of money transfer requests, and verifying suspicious communications. It is also important to protect vulnerable groups from these scams, such as the elderly. #cybersecurity #news #scam #impersonation

Text scams becoming more sophisticated A few days ago, a Stuff article confirmed some reports that SecureSphere had received about a new and very concerning text message scam demanding payment of for using a tolled road with the risk of court action if payment wasn't made. Of our direct SecureSphere clients, none had used a tolled road in quite a while, so knew that the text was a scam message. However, it does go to show that scammers will use any and all tactics, including threatening people with court action if they fail to pay a bogus road toll. NZTA does have a good section on their website detailing current scams and should be a first point to check if the text message received is a scam or not.
