Pro tip #1 for early-stage startups building software who don't have a designer yet Figma has free design systems created by community members that you can use to make your wireframes come to life. If you're trying to make mockups of your concept really quickly, this is a great tool because the components are pre-made for you. Just copy and paste onto your canvas. A UX designer can help make sure your product is intuitive and user friendly, and refine your wireframes and prototypes to be more customer and investor ready. But this is a good tool for you to get the ball rolling on your designs as you flesh out your ideas. Step 1: Open Figma Step 2: Click the House icon to go to the "home" tab Step 3: At the bottom left, click "Explore Community" Step 4: Search "design system" and click on the file that suits your fancy. You can click in to preview. Step 5: Click "Open in Figma" BOOM. You can copy and paste what you need. you don't need a designer at your startup until your Series A on top of being the founder and CEO, I'm the sole designer at my current co and was at Launch House (prev co) I regularly get comments on how good our design is and I've never had a design job or any official training. I believe anyone can learn how to do great design it's pretty easy. here's how I did it: - I'd take apps I liked or used often (like Spotify), screenshot them, and add them into Figma or Sketch at the time. - then, I'd trace the app to create an exact replica inside Figma, giving me all the elements to play with. - from there, I'd brainstorm new features or user flows and add them to these designs using those elements. in tracing & copying somebody else's work you actually learn a lot about what great work looks like. you get to know why a certain designer made certain decisions. most people don't think in detail about these WHYs. but when you're forced to trace and copy, you actually think a lot deeper about these things. and unconsciously you learn about the biases and the underlying techniques of unobtrusive design. it also helps you get good at tools, like Figma. I did this for dozens of apps and by the time I was done, not only I was great at Figma but I also learned a lot about what great design looked like. and I was able to design my own apps. here's one of the apps I rebuilt, probably sitting in some cafe. 👇 #design #startups

Lights on ✹ or off ✦? Trends come and go. This is especially true in web design. The industry jumps on any hype train it can find, only to notice that this train stops at the next station. Not with this trend, though… It has been popular for years now and is gaining more and more popularity. Mostly in my niche, tech companies and startups. Of course, I am talking about: ✽ Dark mode ✽ I definitely have a love-hate relationship with it. Let me explain. Dark mode designs have a lot of benefits if done correctly: ✽ Adds a premium touch to your brand ✽ Visually very pleasing ✽ Feels futuristic and modern rather than conservative and boring ✽ Visuals appear more vibrant and are highlighted ✽ Improved accessibility But like all things in life, it’s not just all positive. Here is where dark mode has its drawbacks (if done badly): ✽ Much harder to nail the design ✽ Brand consistency (not all visuals and colors are designed for dark mode) ✽ Bad psychological impact (less positive compared to light mode) ✽ Feels “strange” to some people ✽ Worse user experience on some platforms and devices So, as you can see, there are quite a handful of drawbacks. Personally, I have a dark mode website because it resonates more with my target audience (tech companies and startups), my branding revolves around it, and I wanted a radical change from my old light mode website. But ultimately, every brand should think about what they want to achieve and then decide what fits best for them. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. What team are you in?
