One of the most demanding aspects of my role is managing disrupted flights and handling passengers' frustrations with empathy and professionalism. A typical day starts with preparing for scheduled flights, ensuring all necessary arrangements are in place. However, unforeseen circumstances such as weather delays or technical issues can disrupt the schedule, requiring quick thinking and effective communication to manage passenger expectations. To remain productive during these challenging situations, I rely on these strategies: 1️⃣ Effective Communication: Keeping passengers informed about the situation and providing regular updates helps manage expectations and reduce anxiety. 2️⃣ Problem-Solving Skills: Quickly assessing the situation and finding alternative solutions, such as rebooking flights or arranging accommodations, is crucial. 3️⃣ Empathy and Patience: Understanding passengers' frustrations and responding with empathy helps defuse tense situations and build rapport. 4️⃣ Team Collaboration: Working closely with my team to coordinate efforts and ensure a cohesive response to the disruption. Despite the challenges, the satisfaction of helping passengers navigate through difficult situations and ensuring their safety and comfort makes every day rewarding. PSA for business travel when you have small kiddos. Fun way to stay emotionally connected; before leaving give them a small stuffy & you also take one on your trip. I chose “Emotional Support Nuggets” because… 1) I’m easily entertained and 2) I have never met a nugget I did not like. (#sweetandsourforthewin) While on the road, snap pics with the stuffy and send. My little nugget loved being downtown Chicago, attending fancy client dinners and enjoyed a big cozy hotel bed! Kids LOVED it! It makes saying goodbye on future trips easier because they look forward to their stuffy following on your work adventures. Also of note, when leaving, I explain that Mommy gets to travel for work. (Emphasis on “GETS to”…not “HAS to”)  Although it’s hard being away, it’s a privilege. Observation is at the heart of my work, and airports provide the perfect backdrop for it. I can not NOT overhear stressed people communicating with each other. Whether it's busy business travelers glued to their phones trying to solve a conflict before boarding or families embarking on a summer vacation, their interactions are often hard to ignore. Especially the ones that are not very pleasant or successful. There's a common saying that traveling with someone reveals their true colors, and I think it also holds true in any stressful situation. At the core is how people communicate under stress. Very visible and audible at the airports. Enhanced self-awareness and refined communication skills are the keys to fostering smooth and productive relationships. Anywhere.
