Sandpiper Health’s 2024 Patient Advocacy Insights Report reveals critical barriers to #healthcareaccess across Asia Pacific. 🔹 Affordability: Two-thirds of survey respondents find healthcare services unaffordable. Inadequate insurance coverage and lack of awareness about options make timely medical care difficult. 🔹 Social Disparities: Social status and wealth influence healthcare access. In Mainland China, wealthier patients can seek overseas treatment. In Singapore, subsidised care often misses those in need, while in Hong Kong, ethnic minorities face language barriers. Rural areas typically have lower medical service standards. 🔹 Reliable Information: Patients struggle to obtain accurate, understandable health information, even from providers. Misinformation online complicates their ability to participate in treatment decisions, with support group chats sometimes being the only reliable source. Addressing these issues is essential to improve healthcare access for all. The term "retrospective" refers to the application of a new policy or regulation to actions, treatments, or situations that occurred before the policy was implemented. Base on the article, in the case of the patient Roy Tan Choon Kang, he began his immunotherapy treatment before the CDL was adopted. Normally, since his treatment started before the new policy, one might expect the new terms of coverage to start on the implementation date. However, because the CDL limitations were applied retrospectively, the new two-year limitation on the use of his immunotherapy drug started from the beginning of his treatment, not from the date the CDL policy came into force. Thus, "retrospective" application in this scenario means patients like Roy Tan are subject to the new rules even for treatments that commenced under previous guidelines. This can lead to unexpected financial and treatment disruptions, as the new policy constraints are retroactively enforced on their ongoing medical care. My thoughts on this? This is where early CI coverage is very helpful. A sum of money to be dispersed which you can use as you see fit - even for non-traditional treatments. Of course, everyone’s financial situation is very different and how they view the healthcare system in Singapore is even more varied. This is where I recommend you to sit down with an experienced FA to help you navigate your options in planning your health protection. For women in the ASEAN region, key barriers to accessing health care include costs, distance to the nearest health facility, and safety, mobility or other concerns associated with going to see a doctor alone. In all cases, the most likely deterrent is a combination of these factors and not one alone. The ASEAN Secretariat #WomenCount #GlobalGoals #SDG3

This year's Zero Discrimination Day theme, "To protect everyone's health, protect everyone's rights," highlights the important relationship between health and human rights. In order to protect the health of all people, it is essential to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare, without discrimination. This means ensuring that people have access to affordable and accessible healthcare, regardless of their economic status, race, gender, or other factors. It also means that healthcare must be provided in a way that respects the rights of patients, including their right to privacy and confidentiality. Only by protecting everyone's health and rights can we ensure a healthy and just society for all. Unfortunately, the NHS in Nigeria is still very far from achieving equity in health care. We are not where we are meant to be, but in all we hope for a better future. We hope for the days where medical tourism will be a thing of the past, we hope to have a health care system we can trust. Zero discrimination day is a reminder to everyone of us, especially health policy makers, health care providers, to do our part in making sure that equity in health care prevails. #zerodiscrimination #healthforall
