Biologists are scientists who study living organisms and their interactions with each other and the environment. Their work encompasses various fields such as genetics, ecology, microbiology, and evolutionary biology, among others. Biologists play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of life on Earth, including its complexities, mechanisms, and interconnectedness. They contribute to vital areas like conservation, medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology, providing solutions to pressing global challenges such as disease, biodiversity loss, food security, and climate change. Investing in a new generation of biologists is essential to sustain progress in these critical areas. By supporting their education, research endeavours, and professional development, society can nurture the next wave of innovative thinkers and problem-solvers equipped to tackle emerging issues and propel scientific discovery forward, ultimately benefiting humanity and the planet. Our mission is to empower previously disadvantaged young women in South Africa by helping them obtain a tertiary education. Join us in our mission to create a brighter future for these women by making a donation. Each year on August 9th, nations worldwide come together to commemorate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This significant date marks the inaugural meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982. The observance serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural tapestry and profound historical legacy of Indigenous peoples globally. Indigenous communities have made contributions across various domains, from environmental stewardship to groundbreaking medical discoveries. Their knowledge has enriched humanity's understanding of the world around us and has provided invaluable insights into sustainable agricultural practices. Many everyday items trace their origins to Indigenous knowledge and innovations, underscoring their pivotal role in shaping modern technology. Despite their invaluable contributions, Indigenous communities continue to face systemic marginalization and economic disparities. At Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB), we understand the profound impact of health disparities on Indigenous and other marginalized communities. To address the importance of representation of diverse populations in clinical trials for the generalizability of trial results, we support the SWOG Cancer Research Network’s efforts to reduce structural barriers to ensure equity and representativeness in clinical trials. As we mark this International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we reflect on their profound contributions and recommit ourselves to building a future where Indigenous knowledge, culture, and human rights are respected and celebrated worldwide. A big congratulations to CoVaRR-Net’s Indigenous Engagement, Development and Research (#CIEDAR) Pillar 7, which has been awarded the Grant for Catalyzing Research Clusters Competition (GCRC) from The University of British Columbia (VPRI) for its Cluster for Indigenous Engagement, Development, and Research: Pandemic Preparedness. Despite experiencing inequitable impacts, many Indigenous Peoples and communities thrived throughout the #COVID19 pandemic. They did so by returning to traditional cultural practices and ways of being that health research often overlooks, missing opportunities to equip Indigenous communities for pandemics. This Indigenous-led research cluster fills this gap by partnering with other Indigenous scholars and communities that CIEDAR has connected with over the last three years. Together, they will focus on identifying the protective factors and pandemic vulnerabilities among Indigenous Peoples around the earth. We’re proud of the fantastic CIEDAR team and wish them continued success. We are excited about the opportunities this grant will provide CIEDAR in its ongoing mission to understand the life experiences, opportunities, and challenges that affect Indigenous health and well-being, and help inform pandemic response. Maximizing Impact in Interventions: Targeting Populations with Low Baseline - Research may offer several takeaways; a key takeaway from the attached study, particularly relevant for CSOs/NGOs, highlights the efficacy of targeting interventions towards populations with lower baseline levels. To achieve immediate (medium-term), pronounced, sustainable, and statistically significant impact, focusing on those starting from a "lower baseline" is crucial.

Most articles about therapies for genetic conditions focus on patients in the West, so this piece on Angelman syndrome in Hong Kong is a welcome and illuminating read:
Rare diseases have GLOBAL impact. This was a lovely article highlighting how families living with rare diseases, like Angelman syndrome, navigate the diagnostic journey, therapeutic opportunities and the hope of drug development reaching their children in Hong Kong. Well done The Xylom capturing the story of a beautiful family and the incredible efforts of advocacy groups changing the trajectory of drug development around the world! The COVID pandemic's influence on public health systems is a deep one. From the lessons learnt in our struggles to find ways to respond, the idea of "pandemic preparedness" took root and emerged as an approach to tackle health emergencies akin to a war footing. But this approach is like insurance, you need it when an emergency strikes. For a healthy lifestyle however, one must not ignore nutritious diets, regular exercise and mental wellbeing. In the same way, the concept of "One Health" is about looking at people's health in conjunction with our living environments that includes the health of our planet and other organisms that co-habit with us. At AVPN, we started to explore this topic tentatively - with a small closed door discussion led by the very knowledgeable Pranay Lal. We were pleasantly surprised by the number of people who showed to our office and logged in online to participate in the dialogue. We then understood the need to bring experts from different fields within public health, animal health and also industry actors in pharma and life sciences into the tent. Join us in Abu Dhabi as this topic takes the stage on the very first day of our AVPN Global Conference on 23rd April moderated by the distinguished Dr. N. Krishna Reddy and joined by Dale Huntington Himanshu Sikka Neena Joshi and Reem Abdelhamid-Gazzaz ريم عمرو عبدالحميد ACCESS Health International Johnson & Johnson IPE Global Limited Heifer International WHO Foundation Bhawani Maurya Ayu Ariyanti Anupama Anand Madhav Joshi #AVPN2024 #OneAsiaOneFuture #healthresilience
