🌍 Quantectum attended the Natural Disasters Expo 2024 in Frankfurt, Germany, on May 15-16, making a significant impact. As a leader in earthquake forecasting, Quantectum joined thousands of professionals and experts in disaster prevention. Blaž Vičič, Quantectum’s Business Development Manager, spoke on earthquake forecasting, drawing on his decade of experience as a seismologist. He highlighted the importance of understanding dynamic stress changes for future earthquake hazards, emphasizing that these risks evolve over time. This knowledge helps decision-makers enhance resilience against future earthquakes. Attendees learned about advancing earthquake preparedness through probabilistic forecasts. 📈 Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/dtRuvWWH

The best science is done when we work together and this week some amazing minds got together to collaborate! Our earthquake monitoring centre experts have taken a trip across the ditch to visit GNS Science in New Zealand. They’re workshopping with their counterparts from around the Pacific to share their knowledge and expertise in earthquake and tsunami detection. Our Pacific partners have a lot of high-value operational and technical experience and expertise, and it’s a privilege to share experiences and gain unique perspectives and new insights into how we manage our response to the threat of earthquakes and tsunamis. The Pacific is a very seismically-active part of the world and the learnings that are shared at forums like this give all the participants a common ground of understanding. This makes it possible for all nations to develop responses to earthquake and tsunami threat that are based upon the best possible science. When we work together, everyone benefits! THE GREAT LISBON EARTHQUAKE OF 1755: ¿THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DISASTER IN THE WESTERN WORLD? In the context of a conversation we had a few days ago, I once again found myself reflecting on the significance of the major disaster caused by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and why Its implications invite us to classify this historic event as one of the most important earthquake/disaster ever lived in the Western world. The arguments supporting this assertion are not related to the magnitude or level of devastation caused by the earthquake itself which was already considerable. Rather, what we are suggesting to is related with the profound cosmovision impact and paradigm shift that this disaster brought in the context of the Enlightenment, and the deep DRR conceptual changes it wrought upon 18th-century Europe. About this intriguing topic, I would like to share a brief note I published a few months ago: https://lnkd.in/dhYc33at #DisasterExpoEurope2024 #DisasterXEU

With at least 137 reported injuries on New Year's Day following a significant earthquake measuring 7.6 in the Noto Peninsula region of Japan, it serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of seismic events. 🌏⚠️ While Austria may not be widely recognized for seismic activity, there are regions prone to earthquakes due to their proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. 1️⃣ Eastern Alps: The eastern part of Austria, particularly areas near the Alps, may experience seismic activity due to complex tectonic interactions. 2️⃣ Vienna Basin: The Vienna Basin has been identified as a seismic risk zone. It's crucial for the capital and its surroundings to be prepared for potential earthquakes. Even in regions with lower seismic activity, it's imperative for communities to prioritize earthquake preparedness and resilience. Natural hazards such as earthquakes are well known to cascadically trigger follow up disasters related to human health. Let's unite to ensure that every corner of our beautiful country is ready to face any challenges that nature may present. 💪🌐 Want to learn more about natural hazards and mitigation strategies? www.sds-unileoben.at #sds #AustriaQuakeAwareness #ResilientCommunities #EarthquakePreparedness #SafetyFirst

I help communities become disaster-resilient by creating plans and practices that match their vision of recovery.
Events like the Nisqually earthquake in 2001 and the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 serve as poignant reminders of the profound impact of seismic activity on human lives, infrastructure, and economies. The Pacific Ring of Fire stands as a testament to the earth's volatile nature, where tectonic boundaries converge to narrate tales of sudden shifts and catastrophic upheavals. In the face of such unyielding threats, emergency preparedness emerges as a paramount concern. Here’s how we can all enhance our preparedness efforts through technology: ✅ Sophisticated monitoring systems ✅ Innovative construction techniques ✅ Comprehensive evacuation protocols ✅ Improved infrastructure However, preparedness extends beyond infrastructure and technology; it encompasses a holistic approach that prioritizes the well-being of every individual. Social cohesion and solidarity are crucial in times of crisis, enabling communities to navigate challenges with resilience and compassion. Ultimately, the Pacific Ring of Fire presents both a challenge and an opportunity for growth and transformation. By embracing the lessons of the past and adopting proactive measures for the future, we can confront the threat posed by seismic activity and emerge stronger, more resilient, and more united than ever before.
