The Lockbit interdiction by FBI/NCA shows a massive escalation in law enforcement coordination and reach. This is not only a big deal, but it finally sends the message that LE has gone offensive and directly destabilizes ransomware infrastructure. Putting up a webpage is not the wait for indictments and prosecution version of LE we are accustomed to seeing. This is law enforcement interdicting criminal organizations and destabilizing them psychologically and electronically. The key message to the criminal organizations -- "we will strike at a date/time of our choosing. You will be unmasked. You are more smart than you think you are. And we can arrest you beyond our borders." While the arrest of two individuals and the indictment of another two are notable, this is helpful in showing that LE can unmask anonymous identities. If those criminals ever step foot into a country with extradition negotiated with victim countries, they will be arrested. And if the criminal is big enough, overflight of countries' boundaries could come into play. Well done FBI/NCA! This is a seismic shift in the way LE will operate and should signal a major shift in concerns for ransomware criminal organizations. #lockbit #cybersecurity #ransomware https://lnkd.in/dEUGqs-P
Cyber extortionists Lockbit are back online A post on Lockbit's extortion website on the 19th February said: "This site is now under the control of the National Crime Agency of the UK, working in close cooperation with the FBI and the international law enforcement task force, 'Operation Cronos'." Lockbit is one of the most PROLIFIC and dominant ransomware operators so it was only a matter of time before their claim of unaffected backups was proven to be the case! They’ve wasted no time, LockBit has already named its first post takedown victim, the US network of specialty hospitals, Ernest Health. This global operation thwarted them for a little over a week! All that effort and resource for 7 days. The necessity to keep systems up to date and allow easy exploitation is beyond concerning. #cyberprotection
