“So often, the media narrative is you have to choose between reform and safety. You can't have both. And what we do is try to show people that no, that's not true. Actually, if you want true safety, you are going to need to change the way that we pursue criminal justice and our public safety systems.” — Akhi Johnson, former director of Vera’s Reshaping Prosecution initiative. In September 2021, Ramsey County, Minnesota law enforcement leaders announced they would reduce minor, non-public traffic stops. Vera’s partnership with Ramsey County shows that by working together, we can improve public safety and reduce racial disparities. Following a productive meeting last Tuesday on Walney to address public concerns over speeding, I am asking residents who were at the meeting, and those who could not attend, to fill in my survey. In particular, I want to hear your thoughts on three key issues: 1. If you are interested in joining a community speed watch group; 2. If you wish to see the speed limits on Carr Lane and Biggar Village reviewed, and 3. If you want North Scale to be reviewed for new speeding measures (e.g., speed bumps). I will then feed this information back to Mo and Jack at the Council and the Police respectively to ensure what was discussed is acted upon. Click here to share your views: https://lnkd.in/egR-tspy

Librarians play an active role in teaching media literacy. They shouldn’t be left out of the conversation when discussing how individual districts and schools can facilitate media literacy instruction. School librarians are effective at teaching students how to evaluate sources for bias, intended audience, and credibility for years. Media literacy looks beyond sources for research and teaches students to critically look at all media.
Commissioner Rosa, NYS Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services Commissioner Bray, and BOCES district superintendents meet with Governor Hochul to discuss media literacy and how to facilitate students’ understanding of media and its role and develop the skillset necessary to become critical thinkers, thoughtful and effective communicators, and informed and responsible members of society.

Blog: YOUth Are Worth Keeping Safe Public safety is often tied to punitive measures like increased policing, but these “tough on crime” policies have failed our youth, leading to higher reoffending rates and negative life outcomes. Fortunately, a shift toward community-centered strategies is emerging. Programs that provide mentorship and support from formerly incarcerated individuals are helping young people avoid the justice system and build brighter futures. Check out our new blog post
