One of the biggest misses for reducing turnover is failing to address your selection process. Why? It takes more time to create a structured competency, culture and context based interview. But, remember “penny wise, pound foolish”. Managers, it is worth the extra time to create a structured interview base. In the long run, you’ll save time by finding the right person the first time.

This resonates strongly. One client had a leader who did not understand several of the roles for which they were hiring, abdicating hiring decisions to even lesser-informed subordinates, while instructing them "Just hire someone. Whoever you think." Their department was one of the poorest performing in the company (unsurprisingly). Why was such a state allowed to persist in a Fortune 100 company? To answer that we'll need to talk about the corporate world's abject fear and loathing of everything relating to Accountability. The point here, however, is just don't do it. Don't treat hiring employees flippantly. Take the time to do the homework, understand the job requirements and associated knowledge, skills, and experience which would help someone succeed in that job, and the personality traits and characteristics which would help them succeed in (and positively contribute to) your culture. If the manager in this story was the owner of their own business and they were going to have to pay that new employee's salary out of their own pocket, I guarantee they wouldn't treat the hiring process so flippantly.

When in doubt, remember: Structured interviews > Unstructured interviews. Why? Structured interviews ensure consistency, reduce bias, and evaluate all candidates against the same criteria. Research shows they are stronger predictors of job performance because they can be built to focus on job-relevant content. When consistency, fairness, and accuracy matter (as they should!), structured interviews are the way to go.
