🌸 Natural pain relief for you, here’s what I do. 🧊 First, ice and cold packs do a great job relieving pain, swelling, and inflammation from injuries and other conditions such as disc herniation, sciatica, facet syndrome, and arthritis. So don’t put it off, even in winter. ☃️ Use either a store bought 🏪 cold pack or: An ice towel. Wet a towel with cold water, and squeeze it until it is just damp. Fold the towel, place it in a plastic bag, and freeze it for 15 minutes. Remove the towel from the bag, and place it on the affected area. 🥶 An ice pack. Put about 1 lb of ice in a plastic bag. Add water to barely cover the ice. 💧Squeeze the air out of the bag and seal it. Wrap the bag in a wet towel and apply it to the affected area. A bag of frozen vegetables. 🥦 When the pain is acute, 🔥 ice for 10 minutes once an hour the first day, then every 2 to 3 hours for the first 3 days. After that, a good pattern is to ice for 15 to 20 minutes 3 times a day: in the morning, in the late afternoon after work or school, and about a half hour before bedtime. Often, people attribute symptoms of illness and disease to simple ‘ageing’ and because they are sometimes subtle, owners are unaware that these are signs of their pet suffering. We want you to make careful and considered decisions that are always in the best interests of the pet who has generously shared their life with you. Our Quality of Life Assessment Worksheet helps owners navigate the confusion of ageing, terminal/chronic or debilitating illness and better understand options for effective palliative care. Today we focus on Appetite, Hydration and Weight and how you can systematically consider the quality of life for your pet through a simple 1-3 scale. Appetite:   1. Your pet is eating normally and their appetite is good. 2. Your pet's appetite is reduced and they need encouragement to eat or are only eating favourite foods. 3. Appetite is intermittent or gone completely. Alternatively, your pet may be keen enough to eat but there is then vomiting and nausea or diarrhoea. Hydration: 1. Water intake is normal. 2. Water intake is abnormal to some degree. 3. Your pet’s level of hydration is inadequate and they require intervention from you (such as syringing or fluids under the skin) to get through the day. Vomiting or diarrhoea may be contributing. Weight: 1. Your pet is in an ideal body weight range. 2. Your pet is an unhealthy weight however change is slow.  3. Weight changes are uncontrolled and increasing or decreasing their food doesn’t seem to make any difference. Our team are available if you need support and want to speak further about your findings.
