Munk, MD, PhD, overviews data investigating multiwavelength photobiomodulation for the treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration. The LIGHTSITE III study, which included 148 eyes treated with either the LumiThera Valeda light delivery system or sham, met its primary outcome of achieving statistically significant improvement in visual acuity among the multiwavelength photobiomodulation cohort compared with the sham arm. A 20%+ reduction in IOP and 50%+ reduction in medication burden out to six years, following canaloplasty? Factor in that this sustained reduction in IOP and meds was achieved without a stent or permanent implant, and without the need to remove trabecular meshwork tissue.... we agree that it sounds too good to be true. Well, almost. In this retrospective study out of Germany by Norbert Koerber, FEBO, MD and Simon Ondrejka, MD, canaloplasty performed via an ab inferno surgical technique with the iTrack™ platform resulted in a reduction in mean IOP from 19.9 ±5.2 mmHg at baseline to 14.6 ±3.3 mmHg at six years (p<0.001). Additionally, the mean number of medications were reduced by more than 50% from 1.9 ±1 to 0.9 ±0.9 (p=0.005) at six years.
