Societies are aging, increasing demand for healthcare services, and bringing budgetary pressures on the public and private sectors. 25% of the world’s population is age 60 or older, and roughly 40% of US physicians are 55 or older. Health spending per person accelerates after 60 in eight major developed countries, while aging tends to dampen the productivity growth that can help finance that spending. In February's edition of our Ready or Not newsletter, we outline three strategies that can prepare our healthcare systems to meet these future stresses > https://owy.mn/48pNobK #OWForum #ReadyOrNot #Healthcare

The Optum C-level Check-in report emphasizes the significance of taking a comprehensive approach to healthcare, utilizing data-driven insights, and prioritizing population health to achieve value-based care. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that efforts must be dedicated to health equity. Optum research reflects that leaders consider health equity the most vital factor in building a sustainable system. Shared solutions to consider: 🏨 Creating complete patient views requires considering social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status, education, and access to resources, which can impact health outcomes. Acknowledging these disparities helps develop targeted interventions for health equality. 🧠 Adopting a holistic approach means integrating physical, mental, and behavioral health care plans that are culturally competent and accessible to diverse populations and attending to patient's complete needs. 🌏 Prioritizing population health by focusing on preventive care and early interventions that can reduce healthcare costs and improve health outcomes for entire populations, as well as addressing the social determinants of health to ensure all individuals have access to necessary healthcare services. 👩⚕️ Embracing value-based care models requires a shift toward a system that incentivizes quality, efficiency, and patient-centered care. However, this shift must also prioritize health equality, a commitment that makes us all responsible for addressing diverse patient populations' unique needs and promoting fairness in healthcare delivery. Here’s a finding you’ll think is obvious 🤔 Older adults make up a disproportionate amount of annual healthcare spending 💸 Despite making up only 31% of the American population, adults aged 55+ account for a majority of overall healthcare expenditures. At face value, this seems to make sense. Health spending often increases with age 🤷 However, the KFF Health Systems analysis also underscores that a small portion (~5%) of the population—largely in the 55+ group—account for nearly half of all spending themselves. These findings emphasize the need to keep prioritizing preventive care as patients age. Severely declining health and increased spending are not a foregone conclusion.

Recently, we launched our inaugural State of Patient Access report, which found that patients face barriers to affordable and accessible healthcare that are exacerbated on the basis of identity. In fact, nearly 2 in 5 adults with chronic illness, or 38%, reported feeling that aspects of their identity—such as their race/ethnicity, age, gender identity, income, etc.—negatively impacted their ability to get the best possible healthcare. Learn more about these and other barriers to accessible, affordable health care at https://lnkd.in/ggSSYEdY.
