In July I presented at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP)'s national conference in Philadelphia about trends affecting the trajectory of higher education. In addition to presenting, I loved learning from others' sessions and had the chance to reflect on that experience with Lee Gardner as he primarily wrote The Chronicle of Higher Education's new publication "Campus Housing for Tomorrow." He really captured my thoughts about the state of sustainability discourse at SCUP well: "I didn't hear a single human being say the word 'LEED,'" referring to the popular standard for rating the greenness of buildings. While Wilson, the sustainability director for Ayers Saint Gross, a design firm that works directly with colleges, didn't hear the term directly invoked, there was plenty of talk of carbon, greenhouse-gas emissions, and myriad other issues relating to sustainability.
