#NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek continues! Knowing that 20% of students, faculty and staff are neurodivergent - a shift is needed toward a more inclusive culture in all campus settings. From classrooms and labs, sports and fitness spaces, to libraries, student common areas and cafeterias – designing spaces that address all physical and mental needs is critical. Access to natural light and the inclusion of biophilic elements were central to the renovation of St. Charles Community College's Life Science Building. The transformation gave them the teaching environment they needed to foster student success. As the Faculty Approachability Project looks forward to an exciting August, here's a recap of our previous episode. While reading The Chronicle of Higher Education article, “The College that refused to die” the mention of an all-too-common challenge many colleges face – the daunting issue of deferred maintenance, was highlighted. Jonathan Nichols book, “Requiem for a college” examines the trend of college closures with a focus on the people involved. Readers will also find mention of “deferred maintenance”, a string in the story of college closures. If you work in higher education and haven't picked this book up yet I strongly recommend it. Walking on college campuses one will typically see buildings in need of basic repairs (painting/roof/etc.). What is often overlooked is the athletic facilities which many universities struggle to maintain. There is a local college unable to host the high school state track championships (or high school meets) due to being unable to fund the needed repairs to their track. Let’s face it, deferred maintenance isn’t just about crumbling buildings; it's a metaphorical roadblock that hinders institution’s ability to provide the best possible education for students. As you delve into the narrative of "The College That Refused to Die," let's explore solutions to the deferred maintenance conundrum. Share best practices, and learn from each other's experiences.
