What do I enjoy about digital engineering and GIS? Well, for me, it's about visualising what the current conditions of the site are like for the construction manager, geologists, construction workers, engineers and architects. When I scan geological areas like landslides and rock face, I show the client the aerial map and the 3D model. But I also go further by using GIS software to visualise the slope map and terrain so that the client knows the cut/fill of the project, as well as the slope at different areas of the site. So therefore, we save the time and money, whilst also creating comprehensive information in only a matter of days instead of weeks. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗶𝗱 📍 🔹𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗶𝗱? 🎯 The geoid is the shape that the ocean surface would take under the influence of Earth’s gravity, including gravitational attraction and rotation, if other factors like winds and tides were absent. It’s like the “mathematical figure of the Earth,” a smooth yet irregular surface resulting from the uneven distribution of mass within and on our planet. 🔹𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 🌍 1. 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The variation of the geoid relative to a reference ellipsoid, indicating where Earth’s mass is denser. It tells us how much the geoid deviates from the idealized ellipsoid. Geoid undulation can be positive (where Earth’s material is denser) or negative (where it’s less dense). 2. 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: The vertical distance between the geoid and a reference ellipsoid which can vary due to gravitational forces. It’s essential for converting ellipsoidal heights (from GPS observations) to orthometric heights (elevation). 🔹𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 ▪️ 𝗚𝗘𝗢𝗜𝗗𝟭𝟴: The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) released GEOID18, a hybrid geoid model that converts GPS ellipsoid heights to orthometric heights. It covers CONUS, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, improving upon GEOID12B with better data analysis and modeling techniques. ▪️𝗘𝗚𝗠: 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 (𝗘𝗚𝗠𝘀) use geopotential coefficients to create global geoids coinciding with mean sea level. These models incorporate data from satellite gravity missions (GRACE & GOCE) and airborne gravity surveys. 🔹𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 🤔 Geoids are essential for 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 and play a pivotal role in 𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. They help ensure that the data we collect is precise and reliable. ▪️𝗢𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: Geoids serve as a reference coordinate surface for determining orthometric heights, crucial for mapping, surveying, and civil engineering projects. ▪️𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: All points on the geoid have the same geopotential (gravitational potential energy + centrifugal potential energy).
