The old cornerstone on this former ice factory simply reads "1905." That's when the American Ice Company built their Plant No. 2 to serve the Baltimore market. Consumer demand was so high, they added a 75' (22.8m) tall red brick storage facility 14 years later. But by the 1950s, electric air conditioning had replaced ice cooling and many of these plants were repurposed or abandoned. Fast forwarding many decades later, our laser scanners documented the relic's 62,000 ft² of split-levels, mezzanines, riveted iron beams, stairwells, rooftop monitors, ramps, nooks and crannies. We then drafted a full set of as-built plans for our friends at PI.KL Studio to work their adaptive reuse magic. The new project is called Lalibela and their plan is to design a home for the production of film, television, technology, culture and community in the heart of Baltimore City. Here's a section cut slicing the historic Baltimore ice factory we scanned a few months ago. It's the three-story portion at the south end of the industrial plant originally built in 1905.⁠ According to the Historic-Structures.com website, this area "featured the engine room on the first floor and filters on the second floor, third floor and roof.
