Skilled. Impactful. Purpose-driven. These are the characteristics of the 362,000 green jobs we will need to fill by 2035. Our data suggests that 61% of people under the age of 35 are looking for work that actively tackles the climate crisis. Thanks to them, we have more than green thumbs, we have a green generation… one that will make net zero possible. At this week’s International Energy Week Conference, I joined Beverley Gower-Jones OBE FEI, Hannah Mary Goodlad and Peter Tipler, to discuss the role of green jobs in powering up the energy transition. At OVO, we are doing everything we can to create and fill these positions, but alone we only make a small dent in what we need to achieve as a country. Alongside my fellow panelists, we discussed the need to: ✅ Embed green skills into education, providing early career support ✅ Implement widespread industry and government support, assisting in job creation and training ✅ Provide a sense of belonging and connection at work, building workplaces that people want to be part of The roadmap has been drafted. Now it’s up to everyone to make it happen.

The US Inflation Reduction Act has turbo-charged the race for green investment, with Canada, the EU and others following suit. https://bit.ly/49fJaVi If we get our approach right, it could make the UK a more competitive place for green investment and growth, but we have to act now. A clear green job definition is needed, utilising local jobs data is needed, and incentivising people to invest in green training is needed - all of this needs to sit within a robust, long-term green Industrial Strategy. Green has so much economic potential, but to stimulate much needed private investment, businesses need a clear signal that governments are serious about Net Zero. Learn more about how this could be achieved in our Defining Green Jobs paper https://bit.ly/49fJaVi

This, in my view, is what it is all about. Compliance is a crucial element but engaging with compliance tools so that they work for you can be so enriching. One can be passive and allow reporting to be a box ticking exercise or one can see this as an opportunity, using compliance tools to reshape strategy. It is worth remembering that the ESRS & double materiality assessments are well researched i.e. not there to trip you up. They do, rather, lay bare areas to tackle as a business. This more engaged approach of integrating sustainability matters into strategy will be invaluable both to your business and our planet & fellow people.

Fascinated by the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I was privileged to join the 5th cohort of the SDGs Advocate Programme (SDGs-AP), embarking on a journey dedicated to fostering positive change. Our inaugural masterclass session proved to be both enlightening and inspiring, as it delved into the significance of sustainable development goals and the critical role of clean energy. Here's a glimpse into the enriching dialogue that unfolded! Introduction to SDGs: Facilitated by Kayode Ogunleye, our session began with an exploration of the historical evolution of sustainable development, leading to a discussion on the core principles underpinning the SDGs—environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic prosperity. The session emphasized the imperative for collective action in addressing pressing global challenges, despite obstacles such as climate change and resource depletion. It highlighted the potential for innovation, technology, collaboration, and education to capitalize on opportunities for progress. It's a dynamic journey that requires concerted effort from all sectors! Clean and Renewable Energy Discussion: Guided by the insightful Fisayo Adeyemi, our conversation delved into the transformative potential of clean energy. We pondered questions surrounding sustainable global power provision and explored the distinctions between clean and renewable energy sources. The significance of clarifying these terms resonates deeply, influencing both grassroots discussions and high-level policy decisions. It's not merely about energy; it's about charting a path towards a greener, healthier future! 🌱
