Samsung is reportedly developing three new camera sensors for mobile devices, including a massive 440MP sensor. These sensors are expected to enter mass production in late 2024, but they may not be used in Samsung's own products. The 50MP GN6 sensor with a 1.6μm pixel size could be an upgrade for flagship smartphones, although it's more likely to be adopted by Chinese manufacturers. The 200MP HP7 sensor, originally planned for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, was canceled due to cost concerns. In response to the global chip shortage exacerbated by the pandemic, India is increasing efforts to develop domestic manufacturing. Challenges include infrastructure investment and building a complete value chain domestically. Rajasthan-based Sahasra Semiconductor is set to become the first Indian company to commence chip production, beginning in September or October. As part of the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), it qualifies for a 25% financial incentive on capital expenditure. Unlike Micron, Sahasra focuses on outsourced semiconductor assembly and test services, assembling and packaging chips for other brands. The company plans to invest ₹600 crore over several years for chip production and infrastructure development. Micron Technology, after announcing its plans to establish a chip assembly and packaging unit in India, is now looking to set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in the country, according to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Communications and IT. This move is seen as a natural progression, allowing Micron to have an end-to-end semiconductor manufacturing chain in India. Currently, Micron has chip manufacturing units in Japan and China. The first Made-in-India chip under the project is expected to be rolled out by December 2024, with an annual production worth $1 billion once the plant is fully operational. Additionally, Vaishnaw mentioned that other global IT majors would soon announce investments under the modified IT hardware production-linked incentive scheme. The goal is to build a complete semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India, with a focus on both assembly, packaging, and higher fabs. The Micron packaging unit, located in Gujarat, will process wafers into chips and then distribute them globally. The government is open to modifying the semiconductor incentive program beyond the current $10 billion budget if required.
