As we continue to celebrate #pridemonth, it's important to know that LGBTQ+ people face a higher risk for mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community or know a friend, co-worker, or loved one that is, it’s important to be aware of these challenges and know what you can to do help yourself or others. Through your Anthem’s Employee Assistance Program, you can find professional, confidential counseling for you and your household members, including a set number of visits each year at no extra cost. You can also tap into more resources and support, including articles, videos, and podcasts on topics such as parenting LGBTQ+ children, LGBTQ+ legal rights, and bullying.

In today's society, conversations around mental health are becoming increasingly prevalent, shedding light on the importance of supporting individuals struggling with their emotional wellbeing. However, within the LGBTQ community, mental health challenges can often be exacerbated by unique experiences of discrimination, stigma, and societal pressures. It is crucial to have an open and honest dialogue about the intersection of LGBTQ identities and mental health to better understand the complexities and provide support where needed. #mentalhealth #LGBTQ+

Associate Dean and Full Professor at Columbia University; Founder at The Dustin Duncan Research Foundation; Opinions my own
I've been reflecting on the challenges of 2023…and am ready to turn adversity into advocacy! As a victim of cyberbullying within the Black LGBTQ+ community, my goal for the new year is to leverage my experience to help other victims. In 2024, I'll use research to shed light on bullying within marginalized groups and how we can effect positive change. I'm committed to creating awareness and understanding of the profound impact of bullying, especially among those already facing inequities. By discovering new insights, we can emphasize how bullying exacerbates mental health issues and further regresses healthy advancement in these populations. #mentalhealthmatters #blacklinkedin #lgbtq #bullyingawareness

Today is National Coming Out Day: Honoring Authenticity, Safety, and the Complexity of Coming Out Today, on National Coming Out Day, we celebrate the courage it takes to live openly and authentically. Coming out is a deeply personal journey, and while it can be empowering, it is also layered with complexity. For some, the decision to come out intersects with safety, culture, family, and religious beliefs. Your safety is always the top priority—coming out should be a choice, not an obligation, and only if it feels right and secure for you. As a therapist working within the LGBTQ+ community, I understand that for many, coming out can bring up complex feelings around religion and beliefs that may have once felt rejecting. Religious trauma is real, and the impact of exclusion and judgment can be profound. Finding safe, affirming spaces to explore your identity is essential, whether through supportive friends, community groups, or trauma-informed therapy. To all who have come out, those who are still considering, and those who offer safe, welcoming spaces for others, thank you for your courage. Today, let’s support each other in building a world where every person can live openly, safely, and proudly, without fear or shame. #NationalComingOutDay #LGBTQ #Authenticity #MentalHealth #ReligiousTrauma #LGBTQTherapist #SocialWork #Inclusivity #SafetyFirst #SupportAndSolidarity

LGBTQ+ individuals face higher rates of depression, suicidal ideation, and other mental health issues. - 48% of transgender adults considered suicide last year. - 57% of LGBTQ+ people faced threats or harassment due to their identity. These numbers underscore the discrimination and trauma this community endures. Yet many report avoiding care due to fears of insensitivity or bias from behavioral health professionals. As practitioners, we have a responsibility to create an affirming, culturally competent environment. The first step is recognizing the complexities and intersectionalities within this diverse population. An LGBTQ+ person of color, for instance, may face compounded marginalization. What strategies are you using to build trust and provide affirmative care? As a coach, I have the privilege of observing my brain during mentor coaching sessions. I have VIP seats to the sh*t show my brain creates to stop me from moving forward. If we don't understand how our unique minds work and learn to operate them, they can become our enemies, preventing us from doing the things we love. We learn how to drive a car and practice many hours before we go on the road so we can use it safely for ourselves and others. Why don’t we do the same with our brains? If we don't do this, we risk becoming hostages to their powers. This is especially true for those of us with immigrant backgrounds or who are members of the LGBTQ+ community and haven't fully integrated our identities and backgrounds into our lives. We can get stuck in the boxes we create for ourselves and may not even realize we are in them. We make excuses like "This is not the right time," "I need more money," "I don't have enough energy," or "I'm not talented enough," instead of looking into the true reasons for not fully engaging with our lives. I invite you to examine your reasons and answer this question: "What is truly stopping me from being who I am and doing what I want?" Thank you for reading this!
