'Open Monumentendag' 2024 Visit 'De Leopoldskazerne' in Ghent On September 8, over 800 monuments across Flanders will open their doors for the 36th edition of 'Open Monumentendag'. Among them is the former Leopold Barracks in Ghent, a historic site that once housed more than 1,300 soldiers after its construction in the early 20th century. The soldiers left in 1955, and the building later became a Health Care Centre for officer training. Today, the closed down monument has been transformed into a vibrant neighborhood, featuring the new headquarters of the Province of East-Flanders, townhouses, apartments, lofts and an attractive square. A hotel is currently under construction. Connector & curious maker to foster people driving bold ideas for a better world with ease and a twinkle in the eyes | strategist*storyteller*transformer | Sustainability does not happen by itself - be a role model
Just got reminded that I am a bit older than I thought… 😅 During my architecture studies, the Malagueira Quarter in Évora, Portugal, reached its completion after two decades of development in 1997. While on a summer vacation road trip through Portugal 🇵🇹, I visited this iconic neighborhood today and was struck by how its design, over 30 years old, remains a testament to #sustainable and adaptable urban planning. Álvaro Siza’s vision allowed residents the freedom to modify their units, creating a dynamic and personalized community space. This flexibility has fostered a unique #identity for Malagueira, seamlessly blending with the historic fabric of Évora while standing as a distinct entity. The project’s enduring success lies in its commitment to serving the community, rather than seeking architectural grandeur. Siza’s approach, integrating low-rise, terraced houses with innovative infrastructure akin to ancient aqueducts, emphasizes functionality and harmony with the landscape. This serves as a powerful reminder: architecture and urban planning should prioritize #societalneeds and #sustainability over monumentalism. 🌿🏘️ #Architecture #UrbanPlanning #Sustainability #ÁlvaroSiza #CommunityDesign

Shimmering Geometry: The Play of Lines (General Secretariat of the European Parliament) Amidst radiant colors and clean lines, a symbol of modern architecture rises. The facades reflect a harmonious symmetry, bridging the past and the future. Here, visionary design meets precise execution, where the spirit of innovation is felt in every corner. European Parliament, the Konrad Adenauer Building on Rue Alcide De Gasperi in the European Quarter (Luxembourg) on the Kirchberg Plateau houses the General Secretariat of the European Parliament. Named after Konrad Adenauer, he was the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1963. How did the built environment come into being? Along with the emergence of civilisation, I realised that architecture has always been a part of our history; not plain shelter, not protection against the natural forces but the art of architecture. Our nomadic lifestyle was replicated in the Inuit's makeshift dwellings, crafted from natural elements, and the Mongolian yurts' tent-like structures. Architecture encouraged permanent settlements in Çatalhöyük, Turkey where interconnected mud brick housing promoted community living. With religion, architecture was indelibly shaped to accommodate spiritual evolution and the Hagia Sophia, initially built as a cathedral transformed into a mosque and later converted to a museum symbolises the religious influence on architecture. The Industrial Revolution reshaped rapid construction techniques for mass production. The Crystal Palace in London featured a cast iron and plate glass structure utilising modular design. The invention of the elevator made way for vertical expansion with The Equitable Life Building in New York City being the spatial experiment. In the present-day scenario, how can we carry this history forward not just as case studies but to inform modern-day architecture? #historyofarchitecture #lessonsfromhistory #worldarchitecture #monumentalarchitecture #architecture #design #ArchitectureAndDesign

Heritage vs. Modernisation: Can We Have Both? 🏛️✨ The tension between preserving heritage and driving modernisation is a constant challenge in our fast-evolving urban landscapes. How do we safeguard the character of historic buildings while adapting them for contemporary use? 🤔 Preserving heritage isn’t just about maintaining a façade—it’s about keeping the stories, craftsmanship, and cultural significance of these buildings alive. But at the same time, cities need to grow and evolve. Often, the demands for sustainability, modern infrastructure, and new functionalities push us to reimagine these spaces. The question is: Can conservation and progress coexist? Some innovative projects have shown it’s possible to retain the soul of a building while integrating cutting-edge technology and design. But the balance isn’t always easy, and in some cases, the push for modernisation can come at the expense of heritage. What’s your view? Should we always preserve, or is there a middle ground where history and progress meet harmoniously? #Heritage #Modernisation #Architecture #Conservation #BuiltEnvironment #UrbanDevelopment #Sustainability #CulturalPreservation #HistoricBuildings

South Africa's architecture is a vivid tapestry, weaving together our diverse cultural heritage and historical narratives. Our indigenous styles, like the Xhosa's rondavels and the Zulu's iconic beehive-shaped iQukwanes, showcase a deep connection with nature and community. These structures, traditionally built with natural materials, embody a sustainable approach that resonates even more today. The colonial period introduced contrasting European styles, from the imposing Palladian architecture to the quaint Cape Dutch buildings with their whitewashed walls and thatched roofs. These buildings, while marking a tumultuous past, also contribute to our rich architectural diversity. In contemporary times, architects like Mokena Makeka lead the charge in infusing urban landscapes with designs that promote healing and unity. Our modern cities reflect this transformation, blending historical elements with new, inclusive visions. (Makeka is an award-winning architect, urbanist and design theoretician and a leading voice on entrepreneurial development, design and urban strategy.) As we construct and dream, our focus is on honouring this diverse legacy and building a future where every structure, old or new, tells a story of our nation's resilience and unity. South African architecture, in all its forms, is not just about buildings – it's about the stories they tell and the futures they envision. #TheConstructionCo https://lnkd.in/dQc9sX32

Project & Development Manager | Interdisciplinary Built Environment Expert | Digitalisation Advocate — I help people and organisations create their dream places and spaces, from inception to operation
As a member of both Docomomo International and the Twentieth Century Society I am delighted to see that three exceptional post-war buildings at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge have been listed at Grade II (particularly Sir Denys Lasdun’s Central Hall building!) With this in mind, let us not forget that while protecting buildings of importance through listing is a significant victory for architectural heritage preservation, it is ‘only’ half the journey. The challenge lies in preserving the architectural character and fabric of modern buildings while improving their operational and technical performance, in order to add value and extend their lifespan. Revaluing and reusing the vast reservoir of existing buildings, rather than constantly building new ones, is the way forward. #c20 #twentiethcenturysociety #docomomo #heritagearchitecture #cambridgearchitecture #modernarchitecture #circularity #climatemergency #historicengland
