Why is EV battery remanufacturing so important to the success of OEMs? Many automakers, still unaware of how to safely and effectively repair battery packs, continue to see recycling as the easiest way to meet their whole life responsibilities. As a result, large numbers of battery packs, of which a large portion of cells are still healthy, are being prematurely recycled. Although recycling is an integral part of EV battery circularity, it is much better for the planet to first maximise the longevity of battery packs and their individual cells. EV battery remanufacturing can help with this, restoring batteries to optimal state of health so they remain in use for longer. And yet, awareness levels about the potential benefits of EV battery remanufacturing remain low. This article describes end-of-life EV battery pathways and how stakeholders expect their sectors to evolve. It's based on interviews with people who work in various industries, including auto dismantling, dealerships, automakers, battery collection and sorting, and, of course, reuse and recycling. We find that there is a market-driven system in place to handle EOL EV batteries, but it depends on profitability in the face of uncertain material recovery value, as well as collection and transportation costs that will be higher for damaged or remote batteries. We also discuss key themes related to safety, collection, transportation, access to battery information, and creating a closed-loop supply chain. I hope this will be a useful resource for anyone who is wondering, "What happens to EV batteries?" and is willing to get a little bit into the weeds. There's always more to say than fits in one paper, but this gives a more comprehensive overview of the landscape than one can easily find elsewhere. Automotive OEMs are mainly focusing on recycling as a means to extract additional value from end of life EV batteries. Although they have a duty to fulfil their whole life obligations, they risk missing out on greater environmental savings by overlooking the possibilities of EV battery repair and remanufacturing. Given the well documented environmental cost of producing EV batteries, we have a duty to ensure they remain in use for as long as possible. Each individual cell is valuable, making it essential for the industry to extract maximum value from them. Many people believe that because EVs have fewer moving parts, that they are less likely to fail. Experience has shown otherwise.  Given the very real risk of degradation, there is a clear need for us to seek ways to restore optimal EV battery health. While repair and remanufacture cannot restore a battery to ‘like new’, they can however rectify faults and reverse the impact of cyclical ageing.  This process actually begins with smarter battery designs. Autocraft works with a number of OEM partners during the design phase to ensure repairability is possible further down the line. As the scale of repair requirements continues to rise with higher rates of EV ownership, batteries that allow for optimal repairability will have a major bearing on the success of the industry.
