Assessing coastal resilience from satellite imagery? Together with Emma Imen TURKI, E. Tonatiuh Mendoza, Alec Torres-Freyermuth, Edward Salameh, Xiao Hua Wang, Lilizju and Gabriela Medellin Mayoral we had a few interesting days at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern to work on this question. Orbiting this question: What do we (=coastal researchers) even mean by resilience? How do we quantify this resilience from our field data? And how do satellite-derived products compare to our field-derived observations? #CRESTE #ISSI

Happy Monday LinkedIn... - Do you sit in panel discussions at conferences with a valuable question or topic that you run out of time to ask? - Are you bored of hearing each panellist give a 5 minute corporate introduction full of pre-rehearsed sound bites that leaves less time for an actual discussion? - Do you find pre-scripted and pre-arranged questions less relevant to the topic of the panel? We want to change that. I'm working with RX Global and Oceanology International and will be hosting a series of expert panel sessions at the Excel next week. These will be 100% audience-led, with no corporate introductions, and the only topic that matters is how we can improve our industry. We can take the discussion in any direction we want. Discussions will be interactive, with the ability to pivot to interesting or controversial topics brought up by the audience, or those taking part on stage, in an effort to have a frank and worthwhile conversation about how we can all work to improve our industry. I have received an invitation to attend the Seventh International Conference on the Nature and Ontology of Spacetime, scheduled for September 16-19, 2024, in Albena, Bulgaria. This event is organized by the Minkowski Institute in Montreal. At the conference, I will be giving talk on my accepted paper titled "Minkowski's Four-Dimensional Continuum and Relativistic Plurality." This paper revisits Hermann Minkowski's seminal 1908 work to argue for the indispensability of the four-dimensional continuum in understanding relativistic effects. By critically examining Minkowski's arguments and exploring the limitations of a purely three-dimensional framework, the paper reinforces the necessity of recognizing spacetime as a real physical entity. The concept of spacetime resolves several paradoxes that arise when interpreting relativistic effects within a purely three-dimensional framework. For instance, length contraction, wherein an object moving relative to an observer appears shorter along the direction of motion, lacks a coherent explanation in three dimensions. However, within Minkowski's four-dimensional spacetime, length contraction is naturally explained as a projection effect due to the relative orientation of the observer’s coordinate system in spacetime.
