Egypt is a leading country in tilapia farming, and tilapia fish is one of the most popular and widely consumed fish in the Egyptian market. Fish farms are spread across the coastal governorates, and Egypt ranks first in aquaculture in Africa and sixth globally, as well as third in tilapia production but recent findings have underscored the lack of awareness around tilapia welfare in Egypt. Tilapia fish welfare is not an individual responsibility but a collective effort everyone should participate in. Through collaboration and awareness, tangible improvements can be achieved in the care and quality of fish. Pure Salmon addresses the challenges of stagnating salmon supply and increasing biological challenges. At the North Atlantic Seafood Forum held in Bergen this week, CEO Kent Kongsdal Rasmussen delivered a presentation on Pure Salmon Technology's adaptable smolt and post-smolt solutions. Developing a post-smolt strategy is one way for farmers to address the tight supply outlook driven by restrictions on new farming licenses in the sea. Increasing the time on land before transferring the fish to sea, growing a larger and robust fish will reduce the time in sea subsequently reducing biological risks. There was consensus on the conference that the industry needs to come together and put strong focus on fish welfare. Labor wants to end the Friday night fish and chip run with its surprise ban on commercial net fishing in North Queensland. Banning nets was one of UNESCO's demands to stop the Great Barrier Reef being listed as 'in danger', but when you look at UNESCO's other demands, you can see cane, bananas and grazing are next in Labor's sights for more undue regulation. Just 20% of Queenslanders catch their own seafood and most rely on commercial fishermen to supply restaurants, but this ban will strip 2000 tonnes of wild-caught barramundi, flathead, grunter and salmon from the market. When Labor comes after our land-based producers as well, we're all going to pay even more for food. Fishers and farmers protested in Brisbane this week because they wake up every day wanting to protect the environment that provides their livelihoods, but Labor only cares about its radical, rushed and ridiculous agenda.
