Nigeria’s beauty and personal care industry is thriving, valued at $7.8 billion as of 2023, with expectations to reach $9.7 billion by the end of the year. Despite the country’s significant import dependence, where $1.1 billion is spent annually on beauty care product imports, local entrepreneurs are finding success. Even in the face of inflationary pressures and low consumer purchasing power, demand for beauty products remains resilient, driven by rising awareness of skincare solutions and a growing urban population. In particular, the demand for organic, plant-based skincare products and clinical beauty solutions tailored to African skin is steadily increasing. Nigerian consumers, particularly women, are becoming more educated about skincare and are seeking out products that not only cater to their unique skin needs but also promote healthy, natural beauty. Amidst this landscape, several Nigerian beauty founders are standing out by offering organic, locally sourced products that challenge the dominance of imported, Western-centric brands. https://lnkd.in/d47mTNvB

The human body contains from 55% to 78% water, depending on body size.[user-generated source?] To function properly, the body requires between one and seven litres (0.22 and 1.54 imp gal; 0.26 and 1.85 US gal)[citation needed] of water per day to avoid dehydration; the precise amount depends on the level of activity, temperature, humidity, and other factors. Most of this is ingested through foods or beverages other than drinking straight water. It is not clear how much water intake is needed by healthy people, though the British Dietetic Association advises that 2.5 liters of total water daily is the minimum to maintain proper hydration, including 1.8 liters (6 to 7 glasses) obtained directly from beverages. Medical literature favors a lower consumption, typically 1 liter of water for an average male, excluding extra requirements due to fluid loss from exercise or warm weather. Healthy kidneys can excrete 0.8 to 1 liter of water per hour, but stress such as exercise can reduce this amount. People can drink far more water than necessary while exercising, putting them at risk of water intoxication (hyperhydration), which can be fatal. The popular claim that "a person should consume eight glasses of water per day" seems to have no real basis in science. Studies have shown that extra water intake, especially up to 500 millilitres (18 imp fl oz; 17 US fl oz) at mealtime, was associated with weight loss. Adequate fluid intake is helpful in preventing constipation. Kudos to Caleb Maru for shedding light on the enormous potential of African products in the global market, specifically highlighting the success of Shea butter exports and other products like Kenyan roses, Moroccan rugs, and Ethiopian coffee. This article did a great job in emphasizing the demand for "made in Africa" goods and the opportunities for growth that come with it. Credit should be given to Munya Hwengwere of BuyZimbabwe Official and organizations such as ZimTrade amongst many others for their efforts in fostering the entrepreneurial landscape and mindset in Zimbabwe. Their work is crucial in helping local businesses thrive and expand their reach beyond national borders. As a reader, It would be interesting to learn more about the role of e-commerce and how Zimbabwean entrepreneurs are using it in connecting African sellers to the world and how technology is helping streamline the shipping process for African products. What are some of the innovative solutions being implemented to facilitate easier and more cost-effective shipping for African businesses?
This ingredient is found only in Africa. It’s a skincare super-ingredient. And this year it will rake in $600 million. What is it? Shea Butter. Shea trees grow in West African countries and parts of East Africa like Uganda and South Sudan. Africa exports most of its Shea butter - with a big chunk heading to Europe and the US. In Ghana alone, Shea butter exports hit over $92m in 2022. Globally, the shea butter market is already worth $600m, and growing. And global demand will drive the growth of Africa’s shea butter market. Africa is taking care of the world’s skin. But it’s not just Shea Butter. - Kenyan roses make up 40% of flower sales in Europe. - Moroccan rugs make up a big part of Morocco’s exports - a $4 billion dollar market - Ethiopia, famous for its coffee, has a billion dollar export market The world wants what Africa is producing. There’s an increasing demand for “made in Africa” goods in fashion, cosmetics, food, and even flowers. It means huge potential for growth on the continent. And now, e-commerce can link local African sellers directly to the rest of the world - removing the middleman. But, demand is the first step. The next step is getting it across the world. With unreliable and long government post services, and very expensive courier options, most African businesses have to: - Pay more than 50% of the price of goods to ship them - Hop on a flight with extra baggage get their goods from one country to the other - Battle payment providers to get their money in and out of Africa If we're having a hard time shipping worldwide, Africa's export potential is just potential. Easy shipping is the missing link for African products to close the distance between Africa and the rest of the world. And tomorrow I’m exploring Africa’s global selling potential and how tech is shipping solutions to grow this. This week, I just discovered Naomi Watts' science-based beauty brand, Stripes, targeting women experiencing menopause. Then while reading this Kenvue interview it's becoming strikingly clear that while preventive aging beauty is going to be a global mainstay, the lines are blurring evermore for beauty brands to invest, create, play and brand in. So what does this signal for the future? Perhaps that potentially more sub-categories will emerge within Beauty that taps into emotional well-being, old rituals and new science, and our skin will more and more be an indicator of Health; all of which continue to be spurred by a growing consumer base (not simply in China) that are willing to spend on self-care and experiment with new schools of wellness. #beauty #health #emotionalwellness #China #global
The "pre-ageing trend" 👧🏼👵🏼 is talked about a lot in China. Young women in their early 20s and even late teens 👩🏼💼 are increasingly engaging in proactive skincare routines. For instance, they are using retinol, vitamin C, sodium hyaluronate, and other ingredients proving efficacy. "Ingredient junkies" (成分党)became a popular buzzword for folks who strive to understand the quality of skincare products just by looking at the ingredient list. They desire to maintain their natural appearance and remain as youthful as they can. A few years ago, this mindset began to manifest in consumer behaviour. Over the last five to ten years, there’s an intriguing statistic that more than half of Chinese consumers are already using anti-ageing products 🔮 without yet showing any visible signs of ageing. So, in essence, they are using products that "offer no physical benefit, only an emotional one"🤱🏼. It’s about investing in themselves, their self-care, and their beauty to "prevent an outcome that may not occur for another 20 or 30 years". It’s like "an insurance policy for future transformation".
