📖A tale about a curious consultant 📖 I was recently working alongside a SAP candidate who was quietly curious about moving into a new role. They weren’t actively applying for roles, they weren’t unhappy in their current position, but they were open to exploring if they could better their situation elsewhere. What was important to them, was finding somewhere they could get more consistent access to local, Norwegian and Scandinavian projects, somewhere they could collaborate in person with locally based and well skilled SAP teams and somewhere that gave them access to an established client base. It was incredibly important for them to see the long term results and ROI from their project work. However, the issue was time. Finding the time to explore a number of options in a sufficient amount of detail in order to establish what was actually the best fit. Together, we took the time to understand what was critically important for this person in order for them to see the value in moving into a new organisation. This gave us the insight in order to point them towards the options and organisations that they would hopefully see as the best fit. Working together, we were able to: 1. Narrow down two potential prospects 2. Arrange well-planned introductory/exploratory meetings with these organisations 3. Complete an efficient, effortless but incredibly effective interview process As a result, this person has now moved into a role with a financial package in excess of their original expectations, one where they will progress at a quicker rate than previous and one where they can spend more time on valuable, in person project collaboration. Most importantly they now work alongside a loyal, local and long term client base where they will see the ROI of the work they conduct. Difficult customer, complex project, demanding role, and similar situations, which you encountered in the past are the main reasons you have developed good client-facing, analytical, technical, and many other skills. So my dear SAP/IT aspirant, be patient. At a later stage, in your career, you'll be grateful for the experience. Ask any Senior and you'll hear a story like the one narrated below; "It was not easy to get an entry. I didn't have all of the required resources to deliver my work. My salary was very low. I often had to work during weekends/nights. There wasn't any support. Nobody was guiding me what to do next." It's not only you who are facing problems, all of us do. Once at an interview I was asked what was the most difficult task in my job. Then, still a young SAP consultant, I quickly answered the question. For a young specialist,all new tasks are challenge, work, stress, happiness from solving a problem. Now, having worked for more than 10 years as Developer, having reached a high grade, I think how I would answer this question. The most difficult task? Any task is solved in a short time - find similar cases, documentations, colleagues from different departments are involved .... But the task is solved and a new one comes along. Sometimes, less difficult, sometimes more. But most often it is a series of approximately the same tasks. It turns out that, having reached a certain level of professionalism, all the challenges becomes routine? Is this cuase to the fact that you know more? Or is there no longer stress, taking on something unknown? Or because the emotions from what has been done are no longer so bright? So how can you answer such a question in your skin as an old worker? :) P. S. And the photo of the most difficult challenge in my life - crab's costume in one night for my little King of crabs.

A lot of what we are today, is influenced by the people we meet along the way. I met Sathish Babu Krishna Vihar today, after a gap of maybe 15-18 years. Babu and I started our careers on the same day exactly 25 years back, as software developers for the (then) innovative ERP company Baan. Just two years after we joined, Babu was promoted to the role of Product Architect. I remained a software developer for another 4 years. I won’t deny being a teeny bit envious at the time but I also knew the company had made the right choice by promoting him so soon. Coincidentally, my promotion as Product Architect - when it happened - was a result of his decision to leave Baan and join SAP. I replaced him in that Product Architect role when he left. Over the years, we have travelled our separate paths and achieved different milestones. We have stayed in touch. We both still remember the core modules of the Sourcing product we built together so many years back. In fact, he still has a CD of the installer, though he isnt sure if it will work on today’s operating systems 😂. These are the fundamentals I learnt during the time I worked with Babu. - Understand what you are trying to achieve. - Dont take shortcuts. - No compromise on quality. - Keep the solution clean. - Be hands on. - Always keep it fun. Laugh a lot. Though I moved from the technical side to the management side of things quite a number of years back, the above learnings will never go out of fashion in any field of work. We dont always get to choose who we work with. When you get the good guys, it makes the career journey easier. That way, I have been lucky.

It was the morning of August 19, 2024. I was just sitting down at my computer before 8am, considering brewing a cup of tea, ready to start another day in the life of a software engineer. It was quite the surprise when my computer notified me there was an issue with the sign in and requested that I try again. Not sure what was going on, I followed the steps, bringing me to a BitLocker screen, asking for a recovery code. After a few minutes of fumbling around, attempting to understand what had happened, I then received a text from a co-worker. It read: "Kaden, do you have log in issues". That was the start of a very confusing day. As it progressed, we learned that the access of nearly half of GM's SAP team (an many other teams) was cut, without so much as a warning (apart from an email sent at 4am to our work computer). We were out of a job. After August 19th, I took a road trip around the country with my brother and father to clear my head and open my eyes to new possibilities. It was an astounding trip, where we visited 20 states (plus DC) in 8 days. This brings me to today, where I have just begun the search for new opportunities. I am open to SAP and Finance IT roles, but also so much more. I am willing to transfer the skills I have acquired into another software industry and even move states or potentially countries if necessary. This is the eve of a new beginning.

I worked abroad a lot: Switzerland Germany, Italy, Netherlands, USA What is the secret of securing an SAP Job Abroad? There are several factors: 1. 👨💼 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Usually you must be Senior in your area. Since the company hiring has more effort on their side (paperwork, cost, lead time to onboard) they would consider people moving abroad for Senior positions. 2. 🗣️ 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵: moving abroad means it is ok for you to start working in English. This also means your English must be very good and easy to understand in international environment. 3. 🌍 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: having some international experience, even just few months, is usually a plus on your resume as it proves you are ready to travel and already has some knowledge of different cultures and differences. 4. 🔬 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹: if the company is willing to do the extra effort of hiring from abroad it usually means the skill they search for is not easy to find and they need to search outside of their country. 5. ⚡ 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 + 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: as always, positive attitude, energy and offering flexibility is a plus on your CV, as the investment the company would do to hire you will be more likely to pay off in results. 💡 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗽: instead of going straight for an abroad position, you could work locally for an international company and then move internally abroad by applying on the internal positions available. Big companies offer positions internally first before searching outside of the organisation.
