New insights from MIT are changing how we view the brain’s reaction to rewards. It turns out, the affluence of the environment we grow up in can significantly influence the brain’s response to positive experiences. Here's to igniting minds and transforming education! 🚀 Recently, I completed a three-day course titled "Neuroscience for Educators." This delved into my unlearning and relearning, thereby shaping a more nuanced understanding of educational neuroscience. Integrating neuroscience into teaching methodologies isn't just beneficial—it's essential. Did you know 🤔 that when the amygdala hijack happens, our 🧠 can't differentiate between real danger and thinking something is dangerous? This makes us react emotionally and stops us from thinking clearly. The Orchid and Dandelion Concept emphasises the unique responses of children to their environment. Orchid children thrive in routine and smaller, familiar settings, showing heightened sensitivity, while Dandelion children exhibit resilience and openness, easily adapting to feedback and diverse social interactions. As someone who works and lives with teenagers, I found ‘Inventing Ourselves: The Secret Life of the Teenage Brain’ by Sarah-Jayne Blakemore an informative and useful read about the neuroscience of adolescence. 🧠 The book refers a lot of different studies into different aspects of adolescent brain development, but remains accessible to the lay reader. What I liked about the discussions about research findings was the reminder that one study does not equate to the last word on a topic. There is a lot of nuance and at times uncertainty about what the research may tell us. This latter point was particularly important in the penultimate chapter on education, and the caution that Blakemore urges about the uncritical and enthusiastic embrace of edu-neuromyths that educators can fall prey to. There are points earlier in my career where I have probably been guilty of this. All that glitters is not gold. However, with the appropriate and careful consideration of findings, neuroscience can support meaningful interventions in education. Those of us working in education, particularly in psychological capacities, have a responsibility to facilitate the curation of meaningful and contextually appropriate resources and interventions backed by evidence. What can we learn from the social lives of fish? The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a Faculty Early Career Development grant to Assistant Professor of Neuroscience Tessa Solomon-Lane to pursue this inquiry. Solomon-Lane’s grant is titled Early-Life Social Environments Drive Behavioral and Neural Mechanisms of Development. The grant will fund a five-year research project and support undergraduate researchers in her lab. The project will explore early-life social experiences and long-term behavioral impacts by studying Burton’s mouthbrooder fish. Solomon-Lane is focusing on behavioral neuroendocrinology. This is the study of how hormones and the brain interact. “Topics in behavioral neuroendocrinology are relevant and impactful not just to the lived experiences of undergraduates, but also more broadly, such as laws impacting life-saving healthcare for pregnant people and trans people, as well as the environment,” said Solomon-Lane.
