International Education Day is crucial for addressing educational disparities among vulnerable children in poverty. It emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable education to break the cycle of poverty and empower these children for a brighter future. #DAAK_ChangingLives

As LIHEAP Program Manager for GNS, the LIHEAP provider in #SiskiyouCounty, California, I wanted to share the impact LIHEAP has had on our rural community. In 2023, our Energy Assistance Team helped over 1,700 households, nearly half of whom were below the federal poverty level, by issuing over $1.7 million in direct utility payments. Our Weatherization Team provided services to 84 households, delivering permanent upgrades worth over $570,000. Notably, over 75% of the dwellings we worked on were owner-occupied. Unfortunately, 2024 has presented new challenges. The additional funding available during the pandemic has mostly been depleted, yet the volume of applications remains high. Many Energy Assistance applicants now face lengthy waits or outright denials. In previous years, LIHEAP funding also supported temporary housing for wildfire evacuees and emergency cooling services during extreme heat events. However, with core services under strain, we've had to make difficult decisions. You can help! August is LIHEAP Action Month.
